Short intro since this is my first post - I picked up a 2007 GX470 with 102K miles back in February after doing a lot of research here and on the other 120 boards. Non-KDSS, non-nav, 3rd row, tow hitch, water pump and timing belt done at 80K. The transfer case is starting to leak so that's next on tap to be addressed.
The air bags are still working fine and it came with new Michelin CrossTerrains, so I'll ride the stock setup until the suspension goes or the bug starts itching too badly
I had a lifted Rodeo for a while and I'll be looking to emulate a similar mild stance when it's time to upgrade tires/suspension. So far I've only been working on cosmetic and interior stuff - debadging, LED interior lights, WeatherTech mats all around, and removed the 3rd row seats.
Anyway, one of the things I wanted to address fairly quickly was the stock radio. I'm really interested in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but I'd like to wait a year or so for those technologies to be refined and have most of the bugs worked out. I considered one of those Chinese Android headunits but didn't want to take the risk. I finally settled on a Clarion headunit, the NX405.
Step one was finding a double din mounting kit. The only one I could find initially was the BeatSonic kit, which looks great but at damn near $400 I was encouraged to laugh and keep searching. I finally stumbled on a custom dash kit on ebay for $40 - I liked that number better so figured I'd give it a shot and see how it worked out. Turns out it's a perfect fit, and while the color is black and doesn't match the gray dash, it's close enough that I probably won't bother getting it painted. I didn't need to do any trimming, and there is only a very slight gap between the headunit and the mount (~1mm) on the sides.
I was able to use the stock mounting bracket for the radio by simply drilling new holes to match up with the depth and angle I wanted.
I used the Axxess TYTO-01 wiring harness for the amp, the Axxess ASWC-1 module to retain the steering wheel controls, a parking brake bypass purchased from Amazon, and the SiriusXM SXV300 tuner. Everything wired up easily enough, and I soldered and taped my wires. The only hang up I had was that the ASWC-1 calls for a green/orange wire connection to the stock plug but didn't actually have one in that color combo. I ended up getting it to work using the green/gold wire - I guess maybe they consider gold to be orange but I know it wasn't just me as I found a lot of questions about that specific wire when I searched Google. Aside from that there were no issues and the ASWC auto programs itself so all I had to do was connect everything to the factory plugs.
The hardest part of this install was cramming the two Axxess modules, SiriusXM tuner, and all of the wires into the limited space there is behind the headunit, but I eventually got everything situated.
Happy to answer any questions if I can. Replacing the stock radio made a huge difference in sound delivery, even with the stock speakers/amp - I'm really happy I upgraded.
