Short intro since this is my first post - I picked up a 2007 GX470 with 102K miles back in February after doing a lot of research here and on the other 120 boards. Non-KDSS, non-nav, 3rd row, tow hitch, water pump and timing belt done at 80K. The transfer case is starting to leak so that's next on tap to be addressed.

The air bags are still working fine and it came with new Michelin CrossTerrains, so I'll ride the stock setup until the suspension goes or the bug starts itching too badly ;) I had a lifted Rodeo for a while and I'll be looking to emulate a similar mild stance when it's time to upgrade tires/suspension. So far I've only been working on cosmetic and interior stuff - debadging, LED interior lights, WeatherTech mats all around, and removed the 3rd row seats.

Anyway, one of the things I wanted to address fairly quickly was the stock radio. I'm really interested in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but I'd like to wait a year or so for those technologies to be refined and have most of the bugs worked out. I considered one of those Chinese Android headunits but didn't want to take the risk. I finally settled on a Clarion headunit, the NX405.

Step one was finding a double din mounting kit. The only one I could find initially was the BeatSonic kit, which looks great but at damn near $400 I was encouraged to laugh and keep searching. I finally stumbled on a custom dash kit on ebay for $40 - I liked that number better so figured I'd give it a shot and see how it worked out. Turns out it's a perfect fit, and while the color is black and doesn't match the gray dash, it's close enough that I probably won't bother getting it painted. I didn't need to do any trimming, and there is only a very slight gap between the headunit and the mount (~1mm) on the sides.

I was able to use the stock mounting bracket for the radio by simply drilling new holes to match up with the depth and angle I wanted.

I used the Axxess TYTO-01 wiring harness for the amp, the Axxess ASWC-1 module to retain the steering wheel controls, a parking brake bypass purchased from Amazon, and the SiriusXM SXV300 tuner. Everything wired up easily enough, and I soldered and taped my wires. The only hang up I had was that the ASWC-1 calls for a green/orange wire connection to the stock plug but didn't actually have one in that color combo. I ended up getting it to work using the green/gold wire - I guess maybe they consider gold to be orange but I know it wasn't just me as I found a lot of questions about that specific wire when I searched Google. Aside from that there were no issues and the ASWC auto programs itself so all I had to do was connect everything to the factory plugs.

The hardest part of this install was cramming the two Axxess modules, SiriusXM tuner, and all of the wires into the limited space there is behind the headunit, but I eventually got everything situated.

Happy to answer any questions if I can. Replacing the stock radio made a huge difference in sound delivery, even with the stock speakers/amp - I'm really happy I upgraded.

Great timing, I was about to purchase the Beatsonic kit, and a stereo from crutchfield.

I just searched ebay and noticed there is a kit that includes the interface and steering wheel control interface for $170.

Do you mind me asking what your whole set-up cost? Where did you get your head unit?

Thanks for the pictures and the info.

Do you get sound out of all 11 of your speakers? aftermarket stereos only have 4 channel speaker outs (more preamps on some though).

Hmm, I only count 9 speakers (3 per front door, 1 per rear, and sub). Am I missing a couple locations? At any rate, yes, I get sound from all of these speakers.

Sure thing. I purchased the head unit from an ebay seller - did a Best Offer and got it new for $450. I sourced everything else but the parking bypass (Amazon) from ebay sellers as well. I'm usually all about Amazon, but in this case ebay offered better deals. Below is the cost breakdown (free shipping on everything but the dash mount). If you'd like links to the specific items/sellers I'd be happy to share. Personally, I think Crutchfield is great for customer service if you don't know what you're doing and need installation help after the purchase, but beyond that they are pretty overpriced on most items.

Axxess TYTO-01 - 50.65
Axxess ASWC-1 - 47.95
Dash mount - 39.99 + 2.99 shipping
SiriusXM SXV300 - 45.99
Clarion NX405 - 450.00
Parking brake bypass - 15.99

Total cost - 653.56

Thanks Diggs, you got a great deal. I am definitely going that route. How difficult was the wiring? I am not a guru but I can do most basics and know how to solder fairly well. Is it pretty straight forward, red-red black-black etc.?

Yes, wiring is relatively straightforward. The TYTO-01 matches up by color. The ASWC-1 only uses a few wires from its harness and there is an installation guide included that tells you which ones to use. Axxess recommends soldered connections but since I didn't want to cut up the factory steering wheel plug I just inserted the bare adapter wires into the factory plug pin holes and hot glued them in place.

There's 2 speakers in the rear hatch with the ML Audio system, can't say if they are present on the non-ML trucks though.

Do the non-ML trucks have an amp as well? I'd assume so if you're getting sound from 9 speakers.

Those speakers are absent in the non-ML, as well as the one in the center of the dash. And yes, non-ML does have the JBL amp - the TYTO-01 module is necessary for aftermarket radios to utilize it.

My brother has a chinese Android unit in his f250 and its actually real awesome ... with the combo of his head unit , using his phone as a wifi hot spot , having a sling box hooked to his cable box at home ... he can watch live cable tv in his truck as long as he has cell service .... aswell as other android functions

anyways I was led to your Thread bc im wondering ...
if I acquired the same temp controller that you have in your non Navi model ...
could I pull my factory head unit (navi and tape deck)....
and install an after market head unit pared with the non navi temp controller and everything still work the way it should ?...

not sure if you have gained the knowledge to know that after this process or not
im wondering if the wiring harness would need changing or modifying

Sorry for the delay in responding, but no, I'm not sure if what you asked would work or not. Considering that you asked over two months ago, maybe you found your answer?

Well I haven't found an answer but I'm prettysure it will work ... the touch screen really only controls the fan speed an vents... I'd like to see the two wiring harnesses together ...
I'm thinkin you can take the wires that control the fan and vents in the navi unit and move them to what I hope is open slots on the AC control plug ... that's hard to explain

But if that works the only other worry is will removing the factory head unit effect any computer systems that are related to the way vehicles operates ...

Hope this makes sense

I understand what you're saying, and it seems like it would work in theory... Only one way to find out!

I have been looking hard for non-navi gx mainly because I want to be able to upgrade the factory stereo, plus I can't stand the look of the dated tape deck in there. This guy seems to have found a way to upgrade the factory audio head unit in a GX with navi by overlaying the new head unit and wiring in new speakers. If I find a good enough deal on a GX with navi I may just go this route to upgrade the factory audio and get rid of the hideous tape deck.

I have seen the video before, but it doesn't show how the new radio was wired in, which is what you need to know.

From the comments in the video it seems like he wired the new stereo and speakers stand alone with new wires to the speakers. He doesn't touch the stock stereo wiring at all, just sticks the factory radio in the glove box since it powers the nav and temperature controls. It does require new speakers since the stock ones I believe have some weird OHM rating.

Years ago when I had an Infiniti car in order to put a new stereo in it you had to completely rewire all the speakers as if there was no stereo or speakers in it. It cost me about $250 just for the labor and the materials. I bought a deck on top of that and new speakers so it put me around 550 total. Kind of sounds like what you have to do with the navvy system as well but I'm not sure
