2006 Lexus GX470

Ext. Black Onyx / Int. Gray

VIN: JTJBT20X160114555
Mileage: 229,XXX

I’m hoping to pass on my GX to a home committed to taking this vehicle to 300,000+ miles. I purchased this car in January of 2022 with the hope of using it as a long-term daily driver and do-it-all vehicle; an impending move to NYC has rendered those plans defunct. I was drawn to this vehicle in particular because of the strong state of the frame (see below video).

Naturally, I had a great deal of maintenance to catch up on from lazy prior owners. In total, I’ve spent in excess of $12,000 over the last 12 months attempting to bring the vehicle to my standard and get it set up for 20+ more years of driving. A great deal of the work was completed at D&R Motors in Columbus (the best GX specialists in the Ohio region, in my opinion). I only hope that the next owner finds benefit in my doing so.

Below is noteworthy maintenance completed in the last 3,000 miles:

Jan 2023
- All new rear brake pads/rotos/calipers/lines/fittings/parking brake hardware
- Oil, filter etc.

Feb 2023
- All new timing belt, water pump, radiator, thermostat, coolant
- Transmission, differential, transfer case fluids
- Alternator, new battery, new ground
- New power steering pump, transmission cooler lines
- New wiper assembly
- Fluid film w/ extensive manual surface rust removal (please note the video features THIS vehicle and is an honest look at the state of the frame - GX 470 Fluid Film Treatment at D&R Motors)

March 2023
- Extensive rust repair around windshield, resealed and repainted with OEM PPG paint

May 2023
- Upgraded headlight assemblies of propriety design by D&R Motors

June 2023
- A/C compressor, a/c condenser, lines, relays, O-ring replacements

August 2023
- Blend door actuator repairs, TPMS sensors

December 2023
- Oil, filter, etc.
- New downstream O2 sensors

My aim is to facilitate an honest, trustworthy sale (unfortunately not something my predecessor saw to…). In all honesty, I would rate the exterior as a 6/10 and interior as an 8/10 as it stands. Below are outstanding projects/issues that you may wish to tackle.

  • Wear to driver’s bolster and armrest; I have received quotes ranging from $450-600 for leather to be cut/resewn to OEM standard
  • Surface oxidation/crusting at junction of grill and hood
  • Paint crazing to bilateral rear bumper corners
  • Check engine light occasionally pops on due to P0420 (Catalyst System 1 Below Threshold); I strongly suspect this is due to small exhaust leak in manifold; light is inconsistent
  • Modest wear/tear commensurate with a vehicle of this age
  • The t-nuts which hold the rear license plate firmly in place rusted away long ago; I have devised a fix which requires quick removal of the rear door trim (takes 5 minutes, hopefully only once)
The car wears Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires with a 2018 date code. The original air-bag suspension has been replaced with standard struts/shocks for ease of maintenance. I have attended to various interior concerns as the year has passed by. These include various trim rattles, rear-door netting, new back-up camera, etc. There is minimal crazing/cracking on the dash.

I am asking for a firm $8,000 accounting for the extensive and proactive maintenance completed over the last year. I recognize that the vehicle continues to carry more cosmetic flaws that other similarly priced examples on the market, though I rarely see this extensive of a maintenance sheet to accompany one.

That being said, my main goal is to have a pleasant and prompt sale.

Please do not hesitate to text (calls will be returned promptly) for more information. I have all records including a Carfax from the time of my purchase. Title is in hand.

Do a lot of 470's have the rust/scale issue?

It reminds me of my FJ60 that was in Colorado and was driven to Arizona on vacations. We considered it to be a rust bucket/sandwich.

I think virtually all 470s have challenges with rust to frames alongside contemporary Toyota products. Unfortunately much more time/labor intensive to correct the failings of prior owners, but alas. Thanks for the comment.
