Hi all,

Would I know if timing has been off by a tooth for an indefinite amount of time?

I come from the solid axle era but I'm doing a timing belt on my parents '02 470. I've done two of these before on later models with the vvti as well as about a dozen non-lc timing belts.

I know for a fact the new belt you see in the picture is installed in the exact same way as the old one is taken off. Before taking the old belt off I marked it with a sharpie at the crank and cams reference points, then lined the two belts together and transferred the scribes while doing a 360 degree tooth-for-tooth rotation, with both belts ending where they started. New belt lines up at the cams and is off at the crank by one. I know the crank didn't move while beltless, and there is no slack between the crank and drivers cam.

I truly believe it's been like this the whole time, but it seemed to drive just fine? We don't have great history of the rig but it appears to have been changed before we got it 8ish years ago. It's at 150k now and we're only doing this for peace of mind. It doesn't have the same get up and go that my siblings other 470s have, but I attribute that to the lack of vvti and 4 speed.

Could the timing advance compensate well enough to make it drive decent while being off by a tooth?

Thanks for any sanity checks

To little info to say for sure. But that belt is on backward. So my guess is your not properly timed. Although belt can be on backward. Paint marks will not be visible or correct.

Belt RH and LH marks. Are as you sit in drive set. So passenger side is RH, drive side is left.

The FSM recommends. Once belt installed, with tensioner in and pin pulled (tension on belt). Spin crankshaft 720 degrees. To where timing marks line up.

Here how it looks before spinning crankshaft two times (720*)

Here's after 720*, which is to check timed. Note, that paint marks no longer line up. But all three hard marks do, at same time..

We can also time to the "T", which we do always in VVTi. So that, cams don't move, from valve spring tension, when belt off. We start with cams on "T", never spinning crankshaft or cams, when belt off on VVTi engine. The crankshaft, is in this position, and cam sprocket line up with "T"s.

In now VVTi, I've found if not time properly or belt breaks. No big deal. Just set cams and crankshaft on marks. Put the belt on. Then do spin 720*, making sure timed.

Ah, I see. I usually don't have these indications to work with, good to know.

I should have mentioned I'm at the T rather than tdc, as I've done with the vvti's. so I think it adds up that the crank isn't pointing straight down, and with the belt backwards it makes sense that the belt mark and sprocket mark are off. I should be good to go now.

Thanks for taking through that with me, I feel a little silly. Let's chalk it up to the lack of sleep from having baby #3 last week 🥴
