Correct. A343F's are not used in production rigs anymore.

They are remanufactured for replacement of rigs that need them.

Well, here I am. My name is Jeff and I am a new transmission owner. (All say "Hi Jeff, welcome to the club!") I never thought I would be here, but here's my story...

Stats:
2000 LX
155,400 miles
Build Date ~12/99
Second owner (since DEC 04, 48K miles when purchased)
No previous tranny problems
I started sucking out 4 qts ATF and replacing with new fluid each time I changed engine oil about five years ago after 90K service
She's been wheeled, but not beaten, been used for everything from hunting to vacations to mall cruising...it is the wife's truck during the week and mine on the weekend.
Frequent towing: 6X12 trailer with race bike and tools (~3000 pounds) usually long distance, and boat and trailer (6000 lb) over 1000' passes at 10-15% grade a couple of times a year usually only 20 miles or so. Did some longer (2 hour) tows with the boat this year. Never overheated, never smelled burnt fluid, DT headers made towing in 2nd gear at 45 mph up those climbs a breeze, even with 285 Revos.

Paid $3900 for a reman tranny and install...:censor: at the Toyo dealer. Only a 1 year warranty, no new trannys readily available, and was told warranty is only one year anyway...

I was pulling my race trailer down to Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham and had left home in Huntsville 15 miles earlier. Tranny went without a sound, without a hint that anything was wrong...one second I am cruising on the level at 75 mph and then I am just freewheelin' down the highway! Coasted to a stop and found no forward or reverse gears. Tranny was rattling, but not making too much noise.

So why do I still love her? Because she got sick only 15 miles from home...could have been 150. Could have been this summer on vacation with the boat. Could have shot pieces up through the floor and made me sing soprano, I guess. But all she did was gently deliver me to the side of the road.

And for only $3900 (or 10% of a low mileage GX or higher mileage LX/LC) I get to keep her for another another 100K miles...:steer:

I got my new tranny at the end of July, runs great now.....^I wonder if they rebuilt mine and put it in yours?

2000 TLC Original Owner 05/2000 Man. Date 85,780 miles

I'm the original owner of a 2000 TLC with 85,780 miles. Build date 05/2000. Regularly serviced by excellent mechanic in Stockton CA, Scott Lender at Autofix. I started reading this thread looking for information about my transmission. It has an intermittent rough down-shift from second to first gear. The tranny shifts great most of the time. Some of the time has a sharp clunky downshift from second to first gear while slowing down. This has been a family hauler and wife's commuter since new.
Wondering if this is a software fix or is there any fix? Tranny has been this way since new. I've never addressed it with the dealer or my mechanic. Thank you,
Peter Crase

2000 LC. 03/2000 manufacture date. 126,000 miles. 3rd owner. I have the maintenance records back to 2006 with no mention of trans issues, so I think it is (was) original. No towing. The fluid had been drained and filled every 7500 miles for the last 30k. PO did good maintenance.

Transmission just died at 126k. No warning. Did not leave me completely stranded, as it was driveable at highway speeds.

I posted up in August 2011 (post #74) when my trans crapped out at 126k miles. Mine was a March 2000 manufacture date, no unusual symptoms before failure. The trans died in the August desert, approximately 115 degrees temp. It was driveable at highway speed, but stalled at every stop (torque converter failure?). I made it 120 miles home by revving it at each stop and popping into "D" to get some momentum.

I previously drained and filled the ATF each oil change (7000 mile intervals) since I purchased the vehicle at 100k miles. The PO used Royal Purple ATF, and I used Mobil 1 or Royal Purple each time.

Some time after the trans died, I found the previous drained contents from the drain and fill at 120k. Life got in the way and I sat on it for a while. I uncovered it again not long ago and sent it in to Blackstone for analysis.

So, attached is my ATF analysis 6k before the transmission failed. I'm not sure it adds to the analysis, but I will let others decide that. I did find Blackstone's comments interesting. Hopefully, this doesn't make a whole bunch of MY2000 owners send in ATF fluid and get freaked out.

It sounds like it fits the pattern well of random, catastrophic failures with no warning, and no correlation to PM or usage history... :meh:

Larry, thanks so much for taking the time to submit your sample for analysis and posting here! And sorry again for your misfortune.

As a 2nd data point, here's mine from before my first fluid change that I know of. PO may have done one, but it wasn't evident in the records.

I'm about to change mine at 169k. Idk that it's ever been changed except that it doesn't look too bad or smell. How much does it cost to submit the sample to blackstone?

At 169k, I'm statistically almost in the clear. This might be because mine was built closer to 01 than 00. My old 2000 was built in late 99 and only had 95k, statistically much more likely to fail.

$25. They will send you some containers free upon request, which you can also use for oil testing.

Good point. I'm May 2000. Larry, what's it say on your door jamb for a build date?

Mine is 3/2000.

Looks like i'm the newest member of the club- my 2000LC tranny died on a highway in Atlanta last friday while I was leaving town for the holiday weekend. 196k miles. Second owner. It gave me 2 very slight indications that something was wrong- about a month prior the gear shifter knob had a slight trouble for about a week going into park from drive. I didn't think much of it because it went away. The more important indication was that second gear, in the low range of the rpm, made a very slight grinding noise. This occurred for a bout a week prior to its demise. I actually was going to leave it at my mechanic while out of town, but they said that they were too busy to look at it/close for Memorial day. They suggested that I bring it buy today.

Ended up having it towed there over the weekend and miraculously somehow still made my flight to Mexico. Now I need to figure out what to do to have it rebuilt or replaced.

I would be ever so grateful for any suggestions- I dont have the build date handy because the truck is at the mechanic. I live in Atlanta and need to find somebody to work on it. My usual mechanic (independent toyo/lexus shop) seemed a bit overwhelmed by the project, and said that they hadn't replaced one of these in a long time.

Truck is otherwise in great shape, Ive owned it for 11 years and its been my everyday driver. Ive redone the interior and various other mods over the past two years. Thanks in advance for any suggestions on what to do.

Hi Scott:

I responded to your PM.

You've got ACC in ATL-- a great LC specific shop with great service and good work.

I would recommend getting the tranny from Sam and have ACC install.

Good luck sir.

What's really starting to scare me is the grind I have going from 1st to 2nd. It's been like this for 30,000 miles. Oil looks clean, although I'm scared to pull the drain plug and see what's hiding up there. I guess I'll wait for the Big Bang.

I personally would only by a Toyota reman. And it's not uncommon for Toyota to substitute new trans for reman if none are in stock. $2385 + peace of mind.

Toyota of Dallas link.
