2000 completely shut down at highway speed—rod knock?

What the ...I’ll admit it, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen anything like that happen before. I wonder what could cause that??

My 2003 blew out a spark plug about 6 months ago at 195K miles. It would still run and drive but it had no power and sounded really bad! Dealer put a coil in the threads and it's been fine since.

Not to say I know all the symptoms or codes on yours, but I would almost by default check(or replace)

02 sensors
Coil Packs
APPS Sensor.

As was mentioned earlier, I know that's terrifying to have it drop like a rock, but it's doubtful this is mechanical.

It just feels rotten when it's that sudden and dramatic.

I've replaced all of the above on mine and had mine magically shut off before I realized the errors.

So my guy got the insert in but now says it sounds like it had a rod knock. WTF! I hope/ think he’s wrong. I guess when the aforementioned plug is in it sounds horrible but if it’s out you can’t hear it? Could this be a cracked manifold and now with a plug that is not leaking exhaust he is hearing exhaust from somewhere else? I just can’t bring myself to think this thing needs an engine?!?! Has anyone out there blow a 2uz?

I'd be very surprised if you have a lower end problem. Have him run his borescope camera back in, check the valves and piston top.

But just in case, there are more than a few non VVt 100 series engine around along the front range.

Again, I'm new to these vehicles/engines, but:
Can an exhaust valve get stuck closed due to a broken rocker, or other similar issue in valve train?
i.e., s*** can't get out of cylinder, it blows plug out and/or back out the intake instead. Sounds like absolute hell when you put plug back in.
Pop valve cover off and look for something fxxxy.

Just to let you know that some technicians are not good at cleaning all the debris falling into the cylinder during the thread tapping process. My cousin's pathfinder had a stucked plug and it broke. Mechanic did the time-sert and said he cleaned it. At the time he started it, he said there was a loud bang and then it started. Now he has to add 1 qt per week! Something seriously went bad inside the engine.

subbed for outcome.

Sorry to hear about this. I was extremely picky also and finally found the LX470 I wanted. Made a deal for a water pump/timing belt replacement before I would buy, as it was not noted in service records with 150K miles. Well, the mechanic incorrectly installed the belt and I made it about 25miles from the dealership before the interference engine was destroyed... at least the top half. Luckily the mechanic stood by his reputation and work and I got a complete engine replacement for my troubles at no cost to me. Any work done to this vehicle recently/before purchase that could be under warranty still?

Now that's the second time I've heard this in as many weeks. So I'd say it's is a sure bet, the 2UZ-fe VVt-i is an interference engine.

This happened to my buddies IS300. Tighten up your sparkplugs boys! A lose sparkplug will work its way out and ruin your threads. I check mine every so often now. He had to use helicoil to repair and found other sparkplugs finger loose too!

Yes Sir! Valves and pistons colliding is a bad time.

I'm seeing lots of loose spark plugs. So I've add a 30K miles PM to clean & inspect plugs.

So it’s home. When I first went to my buddy’s shop and we inspected the knock it was HORRIBLE and my heart sank. Shut it down took out the plug and let it run where you couldn’t really hear the knock. I honestly think the tip of the old spark plug was bouncing around in there and either shot out the top or finally got sucked into the cat because it just quit. Drained the oil down and no metal flakes or debris to speak of. So maybe in the clear we will see. It does need about 1500$ more of eventual maintenance (unrelated) to get it right. So the sellers claim that it was expertly maintained and up to speed on all issues was exaggerated, but hey what are you gonna do. I’m a long time yota owner and NEW hundy guy. To be continued..... maybe .

Hey man, s*** happens.. They probably did do the maintenance..just had a lazy or careless mechanic. First day of new car ownership is fluid changes, hose replacements, and a tune up..because you just never know..until you do.

Thanks for the cliche philosophical stance homie. Im not relating the plug to any kind of maintenance or mechanical oversight. I am, however, saying that with some of the other things needing attention, the level of preventative maintenance was exaggerated by the seller. It’s all good. We all know we are ultimately responsible for our own purchases.
