Hung out with the younger cousins in Solvang, CA

Got it nicely stuck today. This is a NZ braided riverbed, which is usually okay, however I hit a very wet sand bar where the gravel/boulders are just a crust over the top. You can see the sand-in-solution around the rear wheel. The LC was bellied here, and walking around the truck my foot sunk in to my knee. Needed a snatch out, too much for Maxtraxs and digging.

I also made a mistake, turning OFF the traction control once stuck, not realising that that effectively disables ATRAC.... Live and learn. And yes, needs better tyres, ideally smaller rims... I'm just wearing down these existing ones to save money.

Also made me tempted on a hidden winch plate, 12000lb winch, and a sand-anchor in the trunk.

While I know little about the longevity of the platform, the Ranger raptor is a no brainer pick in the segment over the TRD Pro/trailhunter and ZR2. Congrats.
I really want the domestic makes to kick ass, but you nailed the issue for me in your first sentence…longevity.

We loved our 4th gen Navigator, the 3.5 ecoboost was such a great power plant, until it wasn’t. Those first 40k miles were okay… we still had a bunch of issues with dumb stuff, electrical gremlins at first. Once the mechanical stuff started we traded it in.

We are the type that buy and drive as long as possible, there’s not a new domestic that seems to fit this need. Part of our issue was letting the dealer maintain the vehicle, the concierge service was clutch for us with two babies at the time. This was the first vehicle that I let a shop maintain, it was also the last.

What sort of mechanical issues?

Thought this would be fun...:D

Not sure what the odds are of this happening but we parked next to another Land Cruiser twice during our western trip this past summer.
The first was in a Walmart parking lot in Salt Lake City UT; it's a FORCEMAX and it was there when we came out. We didn't get to meet the owner.
The second was in the Old Faithful parking lot in Yellowstone National park. We met these folks who pulled up next to us within seconds of us parking. We exchanged "Hey nice ride" before we all scurried off to see the famous geyser.

What sort of mechanical issues?
Cam phaser failure, timing chain issues, early 3.5 eco boost had turbo issues and coolant line failures. If you ever want to be reassured how good Toyota is (even now) go look at Fordtechmakeuloco on YouTube.

@dudemancool1904 pretty much nailed everyone of my issues but I have to add the transmission puking massive amounts of fluid leaving us stranded in a different state on a road trip with no discernible reason after months of the vehicle being towed to multiple dealerships only to be returned absolutely trashed on the inside from careless tow truck drivers… yeah, that pick up was the last straw for us. Careless techs at multiple dealerships and the mud and grease all over the cappuccino leather was traumatic. Lincoln concierge turned into total jackasses at that point when I raised the interior condition issues and only offered a $200 dealership detail, and they would not give me a loaner unless I paid up front. I hadn’t seen the vehicle for a few months at that point, we had it towed to the nearest local dealership in that state that it stranded us in and it bounced around a couple more dealers before coming to a nearby ford dealership who also couldn’t figure it out. “Just drive it and if it happens again just tow it back”’is what they suggested.

Eff that thing, Ford is dead to me.

How did you end up recovering from this?

It was wet saturated sand cover by a layer of stones. Getting out of the car my foot sunk to my knee. Soft stuff.
Maxtrax and ATRAC did nothing, had to dig it out then got a snatch from a passing ute.
Winch and sand anchor would be the only solution. Lockers would be nice, but would not have helped when up to the frame rails.

I've bought a hidden winch plate and will get a 12000lb winch in a bit. Better tyres and wheels, and a sand anchor or long winch extension line.

Went from E load KO2s to C load Nokian Outpost nA/Ts and to be honest, I wish I would have thrown the KO2s away 50,000 miles ago. Better fuel economy (it does matter, regardless of how much people try to act like it doesn’t), and significantly nicer ride and driving characteristics. I’d rather risk ruining/replacing a tire than put E load tires back on, but to each their own.

Wish I had a snow review, but this will be my first winter with them. With the way they grab and huck gravel, I’m wagering they’ll be pretty solid.
Interesting. Discount Tire has them at 43lbs. Does that sound right?

Good to know. Leased a 24 Expedition Max last year for 3 years. I’ll dump it at the end.

Mine was a 2018 and I know they had fixed a lot of issues by 2022 so you may be ok. Like I said, it’s a great vehicle if it’s behaving properly.

I'm willing to supply Miller High Life if you lend a hand with the install ;)
You got the last set. Fortunately it's easy and fun to put together, adult Erector set. :)

I can’t recall off the top of my head and Nokian’s site leaves a lot to be desired, but that’s where I got mine and a 15lb difference vs the E rated KO2s sounds vaguely familiar.

LT285/60*/r18 Dueler 697 with 25mm (1 inch) spacers.

I thought long and hard about going up to 33’s but the Duelers were on sale with buy 1 get one half off. I also use to have 33s on my old land cruiser with spacers and I just didn’t want to deal with the rubbing and big hit to fuel economy. These Duelers come in about 50 lbs a tire compared to the XL wild peaks at 60ish lbs.

Your truck looks good. Sidewall in your pic shows LT285/60r18, not 65/18.
