Gorgeous rig! Welcome.

Moby actually seems like the perfect name. The 200 is a whale. Huge, intelligent, strong and like nothing else in the water.

Thanks! As for the name, I would add that the "Ahabs" from GM, Ford and Infinity would love to catch up with "Moby" but it will never happen.

BTW, I love all of the pics you all post. I'll get out on the trails one of these days. But probably less solo exploring and no "body damage likely" trails. I broke the rear bumper off of my LR4 going up the north end of Tower Arch/Eye of the Whale trail in Arches. And whereas my wife was fairly game early on, being stuck in snow for 3 hours at the top of Weston Pass (an easy road) and a couple months later getting a flat tire on Weston Pass - both while we were alone - made her a little less confident in my judgement. ;-)

Dinosaur hunting in the Moab outback...

@kreiten, was that along the Willow Flats Rd in Arches NP? Nice trail. Cool dinosaur footprints.

Hi Dan!

Typing from hospital bed...but regarding wife and confidence...just wanted to encourage you to join us next year in Ouray. I've done a lot of Land Cruising alone, but never in a group...and rarely with my wife on anything tricky. One of the super helpful/cool things about the Ouray trip is that it offered my wife the opportunity to see OTHER Cruisers ahead of us (and behind) as they leaned steeply, suspended wheels, articulated fully, and ascended/descended wet, tricky, steep, high, slick and tricky obstacles. This allowed to her visualize exactly what's going on BENEATH our own Cruiser in a way she could just never do without being in a group. Also... Wow. What a great group of nice people. She's super shy, and it was good for her to have this chance to see other spouses and kids navigate terrain that might have been far too intimidating were she just stuck taking my word for it in terms of what's passable, etc. She is ABSOLUTELY HOOKED NOW(WOOHOO!!) and looking forward to the next outing with anticipation! :) I'm stuck without a usable right leg for at least 3 months after an accident (not from Ouray!), but I know she'll be itching to go again as soon as we can...and THAT...is about as great an outcome as I could have hoped from taking her with me to Ouray. It was also my first time in a largish group, and I know I learned a lot from watching other Cruisers as well.

See you around,

Markuson

@Markuson, hospital bed?! Here's hoping you heal soon. BTW, we did parts of Ouray 2 years ago in our LR4. My wife did enjoy it. Also had my 85 year old father along as he had helped fund the LR4 and had done a bit of offroad in his Wrangler when he was in his early 80's. (He drove his RV over from Oregon pulling his Wrangler and drove into the Maze in Canyonlands NP.) We did the Red Mountain trail/area (very cool and not hard), California/Hurricane/Corkscrew Gulch the next day. My wife loved it. Also enjoyed Last Dollar Road from Dallas Diviede to Telluride. And we did another Pass out of Ridgway into an area that was use for shooting the original True Grit movie. But we didn't consider Black Bear or Imogene. I have a phobia of shelf roads. (I know. How can you go off road in CO and not do shelf roads!) And my wife "doesn't do scary." But we still find plenty of gorgeous areas to see, hike and photograph and that's mostly what we're about.

Oh, and since I was PM'd about getting stuck in snow. Here is a pic. A couple of lessons learned from this but one is that growing through snow is like fording a stream. Best to check the depth first!

Oh man!!! I've been there! Literally and figuratively--Weston Pass (if that's where you were).

Check the depth?! That's for suckers. Break out the maxtraxx, winch, hi-lift and shovel! How else will you know if you can get unstuck? :)

Bingo, that was one of many roads we found and explored! I think Willows was the one that leads to a back way into the park...

side note, if you're ever in Capital Reef do your self a solid and swing by the Gifford Homestead and grab yourself some homemade peach pie! S**T was real good!

Ha! That was the problem - or rather my lack of experience. I wasn't prepared. I'm thinking, "Hey, it's June. How bad can it be?" So no Maxtraxx and just a wimpy shovel. I now have Maxtraxx and a real shovel always on my rack. I did try a Hi Lift jack (in part to replace the stock jack you see me using in the picture) but the LR4 didn't have a decent place to use a Hi Lift so I set it aside and now have an X-Jack if I find myself off road.

Yep. Willow Flats allows you to get into the park for free. So does the Salt Valley road though it is easier (unless there is water running through a couple of areas which is rare. Here is a pic from the Salt Valley Rd. It is also the road from which to enter the Tower Arch/Eye of the Whale trail (if you drive it the direction that they want you to.) Salt Valley road is best driven in the late afternoon sun. I'm told that you are an excellent photographer so you'll understand why. ;-)

way off the grid in Capital Reef...

Capital Reef is also awesome. Though I've explored the southern half a bit, I've not yet done the northern section. Also did Burr Trail Road and the 3-mile 4x4 drive out to the Strike Valley Overlook which is incredible. I've also explored some of the area west of Highway 24 and south of I70; NW of Goblin Valley State Park past Temple Mountain. But all of this plus some trails in AZ and others in CO was over the past 2 years in our LR4. So not appropriate for this forum. These will be my last Land Rover pics. I promise! Just teasing some ideas of where to drive our Land Cruisers ;-)

I love the trail feedback, keep it coming, we're always looking for new trails to run! Willows road was like a race track, our entire truck pretty much turned red after running that thing at speed! We started on some roads south of there, just across from the Dinosaur place, we took those way east, but then cut back and headed north to jump on to Willows road. We did a bunch of small 4x4 only trails in Cap Reef, the longest one we ran was S Draw trail, have ya heard of that one? It went from well maintained to washed out to giant cracks etc, pretty cool little trail... Thanks for all the info!

Man, if even the "S**T was real good," I can only IMAGINE how good it must have been while it was still pie! :hillbilly:

OK. New member. Second time LC owner but our previous one was a 100-series about 15 years ago. The new one is a 2016. (Had a 100-series about 15 years ago and loved it.) Came over from 2 years and 55K miles with an LR4 that I loved. So many great memories. But I could never get comfortable with its towing capabilities and rather then downsize our trailer we decided to upsize our tow vehicle. First real towing experience with the new LC this past week and it felt great. Absolutely the right move.

We don't plan to do much, if anything, in the way of mods. Maybe sliders. Definitely tires. Already removed the 3rd row. But our off roading will be more tame than what I did with the LR4. Not because the LC is less capable (though I miss the turn radius and angles of the LR4) but because we're moving in a different direction a bit. Plenty of forest service roads in our future but none of the hours of rock crawling.

White with black interior may be boring. But seems easier to see from the outside. And I'll learn to live with the black.

Now for a name. I called my LR4 "Lara" as in Lara Croft (British, sophisticated, very capable and ready for adventure). Looking at my white LC the first thing that came to mind was "Moby" as in "Moby Dick". I guess I should come up with something better than a white whale. ;)

Pics below. My son was impressed with the moon roof large enough to climb out in an emergency. I was impressed with the wheel articulation on this little mogul run. And white does look good with the new trailer.

I'm with you on that! Did it 2 years ago picking it up in Fallon and going east from there. The only action we had was the dozens of unavoidable jack rabbits who decided to hang out in the middle of the road after dark. Try as I did to miss them I must have hit 10. That was on a section of the "old Highway 50", now called Highway 722 over a mountain pass into the town of Austin where we spent the night. Definitely a classic.

We grabbed milkshakes in Austin, pretty cool little town! You sure know your way around the country!
