I'm a new member, and I have tried searching for some info on putting a 1uz in the older fj, like my 60. And I can't find anything out. What would be the easiest way to go? Get a custom bell housing made? Use a transmission that there is already an adapter for and get an adapter for my transfer case? I'd like to use this motor to keep it Toyota, and I can pick them up for basically free here.

that motor would be bolt up to the r151 (mini truck) trans and but then you end up with a centered rear output min truck transfer case. I've never seen someone bolt up one of these to a h42 or h55f trans but I do believe that would have to be one off custom bellhousing if you went that route. Or you could do a divorced transfer case behind the r151, getting expensive though.

after saying that I wouldn't do a swap like that just cause you can get a cheap motor, either way it will make you pay big in the end...

I see what your saying... Well it would be the same price for that, a small block Chevy or ford 302. That said, there are plenty of write ups and such on an American v8 swap. I'm just wanting the most driver friendly build I can manage without breaking the old piggie bank.

I would not be worried for the t-case option .. while you can run as is you always have the option for a mini rear centered, tacoma or something bigger than your stock like D60 .. you you can go custom rear axle ..

Anyhow I would be more concern about the engine / ECU wiring ..

IIRC there are just a few wires actually necessary to tun that engine .. something like 6 wires or so .. I have more info in my other laptop that I can share.

Info would be great! Thank you in advance. From what I've read a "Tacoma" rear will fit under my rig fine. Whatever year they started, 94? Or so. And up will work. Those hold up well enough from what I have seen. I'm not looking for a crazy rock crawler or anything. Just a simple and clean install, better mpg and drivability. Some trails and fields, fishing mostly, I don't hunt near as much as I used to. Plus, I have a 2012 ram on 35's, and it's a beast. *Probably* won't go more than 33x10.5 on this fj.

Assuming you have factory harness ..

you gotta power 5 relays EFI Main, 2 Ing Relay, Fuel Pump, Starter ( last one as you imagine only temp while " starting " ) from which donor you will source it ?

I drove a ls400 with that engine for a while; excellent engine but seemed rather low on torque even in the car. I know you can do all sorts of stuff to it but imo a 2uz might be a better start.

There's a few cars. Two ls cars and my buddy wrecked his 340sx with one in it. It's ready to just drop in whatever, but it's the most expensive one. Probably just end up with a 350 tbi, because apparently there's no cost effective way to go about the 1uz in this truck. Probably going to still get that motor though. but I'll be pulling that 2f here soon. So if anyone wants or needs an extra block one? It's got 180k on it, ran fine before it was parked. Has a webber carb, a grocery list of new parts. I just can't get it figured out, maybe some of you cruiser heads can.

2uzfe is better on torque but your trans options are limited or expensive. You either have to use 100 series or tundra auto trans with tcase or source a very expensive h1f1 with the corresponding flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, tcase. It can be done but kinda rules out that engine swap for cost reasons.

Gotcha. It just seems like the torque on that thing was made in a much higher rpm range than the where the 2F's is; seems it'd be almost the polar opposite kind of engine. It also required premium and liked the gas, or at least mine did. Maybe it'd do great as a daily driver engine, idk, I just know I like the grunty low end.

What do you mean you can't figure it out? Taking it to a good cruiser shop to get it tuned would be cheaper than doing a v8 swap and less time consuming.

Agreed, you will always have plenty of time to think about engine swaps while your cruising the slow lane, atleast that's what I do...

I too an interested in this topic. Here's a newer thread for stragglers like me reviving a 7 year old post....
It sounds like an adapter is in order, have been built and installed on a H55, but there's questions about the size of the clutch. The LS400 comes in at nearly 4,000 pounds so it's close to the criser considering you are dropping like 550 pounds of the engine weight. But the torque is way less. Perhaps a diff re-gear would be in order.
