Should an 85 4runner with an automatic transmission need to be regeared to run 33's? If so, what gear ratio would be recommended. Thanks.

Never mind, I did a search and I think since it is a auto it should have stock 4:88 which should be fine for 33's.

should be 4.38 gears

Keep in mind that 4.88 diffs were offered on V6 trucks with automatic trannies and 31" tires. You might still be dogging with that 22re.

I ran 529 with bald 35's and it shifted in and out of od alot.

5.29:1

my 85 4runner is an automatic (for now) it came with 4.30's and i went to 5.29's and 33 inch LTB SuperSwampers and it is SLOW i NEVER use Overdrive EVER......but soon ill be transplanting a 5speed!!!! P.S. you think you got PRND21 but when you point your truck up some boulders at the sky the ATF runs to the back of the tranny and you get PNNNNN

Never had that problem with the a340h or the a340f. I know some people have had it happened (rare). But im here to say the Toy auto kicks ass, especially with some power to spin it.

But 22re/auto is circus slow!

My 86 Runner with an auto also has 4.30's. I changed to 5.29's and I am very happy with the 33's (for now).

Yeah 22re/auto is slow!!!!!Amish buggies pass me and flip me off! And as far as the stock 85 auto matic goes i will give it some credit...First of all i absolutely stand this truck on the rear bumper/tailgate etc and under those conditions it loses fluid pressure and is all neutral now i will say this is a 24 year old 111k never touched tranny and it takes this slips like crazy, shudders and bangs back into drive or not but lives to fight another day........also when you bury this truck is deep gumbo mud in 4wd low, first gear you can floor the truck and the wheels WILL NOT turn, the torque convertor eats up the motors power but none gets through to the wheels leavin me with 2 options #1 winch.....waist deep mud n water....only as a last resort #2 put truck in neutral rev up to 4-6 thousand, yank into gear and floor it....repeatedely this too the 24 year old 111k tranny takes and lives to fight another day.....The Verdict...the toyota(or any) automatic is not ideal for a hardcore trail vehicle
