I am wondering the lifespan of a 1HZ. What are the kms that these should last too?.

What about a 1hz that has been set up properly with a low boost and a low max EGT? I know of a truck that got a turbo at 156,000kms. It currently has 285,000. How long do you figure that engine would be good until?

1HZ's in standard form are very reliable things. Half-a-million Km's wouldn't be unheard of for a routinely maintained 1HZ. Our undergound fleet of HZJ trayback utes and 105 series cruisers get used and abused everyday and take it all in their stride. The chassis and bodies rust out before the engine dies. I have noticed that some of the ones i drive are real sluggish and others ones feel more responsive. The vehicles that operate in our open pit are left sitting at idle for excessive amounts of time, just to keep the cab cool with air con. I shudder when i pass them sitting there idling for so long. I think the ones that get worked hard regularly underground drive much better.

I've got no experience with turbocharged 1HZ's but i guess if you go down that path then you have to know what you are getting into. In Australia we here stories all the time of issues with turboed 1HZ's and then we also here stories from many happy people who've had no problems.

If it was me i'd leave it stock and put up with the lack of power. Reliability is the standard 1HZ's strong point.

-Keep it stock and don't worry about driving it hard...
or
-Turbocharge it and drive it sensibly. :hhmm:

as above, if you want reliabiility, dont turbo it. Very mixed reports on longevity once turboed.

In Australia, there are 1HZs in std trim that have done over 1million kms (documented) without any major work.

Turboing does not impact the longevity much depending on how much boost you want to run at. I can't see any problem with putting on a turbo and setting it at 8 or 9 lbs of boost. If you treat her nice and don't rev the snot out of it, then she'll be as good as a non=turboed 1HZ - maybe better because you won't need to rev the snot out of it.

its boosting at 7psi.... should be safe. I would love to get it up to about 10.
Low amount of fuel. Have a low max egt.
I don't drive a diesel like a sports car.

boosting doesn't kill and engine, your right foot does.

change the oil, use decent filters, DO NOT use K&N (or the knock offs) and don't bag on it and it will last a long long long time.

the big thing is how the previous owner looked after it, if he didn't they you are fawked...

that just tells you the compression, nothing else.
compression test,
oil test,
coolant pressure test,
see some paperwork of oil changes etc
a close look at the interior and under the hood (with the rose colored glasses removed).

if you were buying from Sheldon, one of his own trucks, then not an issue. \
if you were buying from Wayne, one of his own trucks, then you might have an issue.

ummm, if it is my personal truck then yes. (and i price it accodingly). if it is a Luxury Imports truck then no concerns.
as my wife says "Wayne, you are hard on things" ... she should know.

Remember that 8274 you were trying to sell me before departing Cowtown? Was that your personal winch? Cause I think I have four of your old winches on my shop floor. :D

ahahaahahh
My opportunity has came and gone for the truck I was looking at.
The hunt continues in japan... I know my wait will pay off.

what a great truth ..

Yes, but that is like saying your engine will never blow if it is parked in the driveway and never running. But I understand what he is saying, the same can be said for the 1HDT or any other engine for that matter.

The 1HZ is a 10,000 hour engine before major rebuild (mine use), in real life 500,000 kms with no turbo, guys with turbos are getting 200,000-300,000 kms with no problems and still going - there are always exceptions to the rule of course.

Better than the 2H, comparable to the 3B but more power, quieter, more parts etc etc etc.
