Hi Guys

My LC 80 VX Diesel is smoking a bit, if I mean smoking it is diesel smoke, when I pull my caravan, it is black on the one side when I get to the other side.

My question is can I set the diesel pump my self to adjust the richness?

yes, you can.
there is a screw to set overall fuel
another to set the on-boost fuel

before you start fiddling with fuel settings, most people will recommend that you add a pyrometer to monitor your exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs) and also a boost gauge so that you can see what you are doing to your motor.

you may also wan to simply check your air filter. a dirty air filter can cause black smoke too. (so can worn-out injectors, so can a turbo that needs a rebuild).

for more info on fuel settings, search 'adjust injection pump' on the diesel section here. It has been covered in depth.

I wouldn't mess with the fuel pump unless you know what you're doing, mine was just rebuilt at a cost of 1400$, I would check the other things mentioned by sandcruiser first. If you still want it adjusted, take it to an injection shop, have your acsd removed at the same time!

Hi Guys

Thx, I have a new air filter.

The pump and injectors was overhailed about 30000 km's back :(

Let me rather take it to someone and see what they say.

I turned my fuel set screw back about an 1/8 turn and have found it smokes less, I have not adjusted the on boost fuel yet but that one seems a bit more complicated, or so i think.

If I really punch the throttle I will get smoke, otherwise with my driving I don't get any black.

Cheers

Mine smokes a little at idle in drive but much less or not at all in idle in neutral. I may adjust my idle to see. Mine also puffs if i mash the throttle but nothing while cruising.

There ya go, the one just to the right & below the one that says OUT

That screw is a PITA to get to but with a little screwing around it can be done.

I would assume the jacket that is on there is to prevent you to increasing the fuel?

cheers

NO, NO, & NO

As i said above the one just below & to the right of the one saying OUT

You'll need a spanner to slaken the locknut first then it's trial & error, remember it's position before you start so you can go back to how it was if needed, only adjust an 1/8 of an inch at a time & try it up the road each time till your happy.

Fantastic picture and thread that has really helped me to reduce my black smoke.

Fairly simple procedure
Before starting this job please ensure your air filter is reasonably clean, not plugged.
Better Picture here, I know it's Mopar but basically the same pump.

Document your changes and/or paint the screw threads before starting
Before you start unclip the Throttle lever(ball and socket) as this will give you room to work,...replace when done!
The main fuel screw is protected by a lock (14mm deep socket), be sure to adjust and lock when done.
Less fuel will decrease RPM at idle, more fuel will increase RPM at idle, (start with 1/8 turn) therfore you will have to adjust the idle screw as well. The idle screw for memory uses a 10mm & 8mm set to 850 on your tach and lock.

Later we can mess with Boost, fuel pins, springs, shims to name a few, by then you should have a boost gauge and pyro or trust yourself by being gentle on the skinny pedal.

Tons of pictures and help on board enjoy!

Your link doesn't work, are you able to fix it?

Hello guys,

I have the same problem on my hdt, is running rich on fuel, so I made a little adjustment on the screw like joinerman said.
I haven't tested the car, as soon as I check the results I will share it with you guys.
Here are some useful pictures of the After and Before.

I will go and adjust this little by little until I see is fine.

Hey guys, here is an update...
I fixed the problem by adjusting the screw. It used to burn my eyes when staying of the back of my car, but now it does not.
PD... After Installing a 3 inches muffler, the problem came again... I re-adjusted the screw 1/4 of turn right, and it stopped again.
Good post here, it was useful to me. Thanks.
