1HD-T/FT metallic ting noise at idle

My BEB's that I removed were all in perfect condition except for 1. I got to the very last one and thought someone had recently done the job already. #3 top bearing had some delam. I ran my finger around surface of (journal I guess) but couldn't feel any rough spots

I wonder what it is about #1? Is your truck auto or manual? I only had 97,000km on the clock when my crank snapped. No real clues as to why. The entire truck is in great shape and was all stock.

Oh wow! I guess my post was confusing because I said all were fine except 1. I meant only one bearing half out of 12 was bad. The bad one was on the top of #3

Just came across this video, sounds very similar, and was traced to a failing torque converter...

The second video sounds just like mine, but not the first video. Mine makes that noise at idle, and I can also hear it under heavy load going up a hill when im starting to lug it a bit in overdrive. Once I drop it back to 3rd and the egts come down the noise stops. Wouldn't surprise me if it was the TC, but so far its been the same noise for 3 years with no changes, doesn't affect drive-ability. If it ever goes I'd probably go with one of the heavy duty WA ones.

I ran into this service bulletin from GM that discusses the typewriter tick many of their trucks have (and apparently ours too). The sound in some YouTube videos of these trucks is nearly identical to what I have on my truck.

This noise is caused by the relationship of the engine cylinder block, crankshaft journals, bearing inserts and the oil film. This relationship may allow a vibration that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. The noise could be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound, like random typing on a mechanical typewriter.

So glad im found this thread I'm having the exact same issue after the last oil change (10w-40 HX6). The ticking only starts when the block is warm and comes from the right back end of the block below/behind the exhaust manifold... with the old oil it was only sometimes after a long autobahn drive with the fresh oil its ticking like hell after 15 min of driving.

The truck has run 288k and is a manual from 1HD-T from 1992 and I don't know if the BEB have been done so far. I went to a shop and they said it can't be the BEB as the sound would be more regular and louder. My ticking is irregular on idle and when revving up stats to become regular as well there is some kind of ticking when the revs drop down to idle. The sound can only be heard with windows down and next to a wall. I still need to find a shop who knows the older engines.

Someone suggested to check the valve clearance... Maybe someone already solved the mystery

I would be changing the BEB to at least eliminate that problem and give you piece of mind. Your mechanic is not going to fix the engine for free, and he obviously doesn't understand the BEB problems these engines have had.
My old boss's HDJ80 was making some ticking noises like these and he also had bubbles in the radiator. Sorry, I left before the problem was solved.
The 1HD T and 1HZ engines have long had mysterious ticking sounds . My HZJ75 had something similar to yours where it would start about 10-15 mins when it got warm. It never got loud and was there for 120000klms while I owned the car. I had the BEB changed as a precaution but the old ones were in perfect condition at 230000klms.

I changed the BEB, checked injectors, checked valve timing and redid the injection pump last summer. Runs like a brand new engine but still has the ticking sounds when warmed up. Sometimes more sometimes barely noticeable... so I will just ignore it
