No, you're out of your mind. That, or you'e one of the guys at the repair shop/dealership that would make that offensive offer. Did you read the rest of the posts here? You're in the minority in that thinking.

These trucks are a tad more rare up here though. Considering all the work you put into it I wouldn't let it go cheap. If the head is ok and the crank can be machined what's all the fuss? If you don't like doing that kind of work then buy a running block from a reputable guy here and part your old engine out. Serously, this is just an engine we're talking about.
If it was a Prado yes 3 but and 80 with the added bolt on's no. To cheap. Does this have lockers? Pm me if your selling it. Crushers is from that area he might be able to guide you better.
There's a guy local to me - Jonathan Schultz - He's reputed as a bit of a diesel guru. He's offered to work the engine for a pretty good deal, so I'm pulling the 1HD and sending him the shortblock for the winter to get rebuilt.
Have you considered a 1HD-FT? I would be curious of the cost difference between rebuilding your current engine and swapping in an improved motor and selling/parting what you have. I'd be willing to bet that the cost difference is very little in which case the decision would be between rebuilt engine or 24 valves and slightly improved design.

The cost difference is quite a bit actually. I'm swapping an FT into my 96' currently and I imported it from the UK with several other HD-T's. It was several thousand (USD) more just for the FT and I believe those engines are fairly rare in Canada also.
Well I did a little search on this vehicle for you as per what was done at ateb. Small world I actually know this truck. The head cracked and a factory new head was put in. The previous owner had said that raddcruisers on the island had redone the tranny and beb's two years prior. I have no reason not to believe the owner ,he seemed like a honest guy and had no gains to lie. Might want to try raddcruisers out just to be sure though. On another note. If you need any used rod pistons etc just give John at ateb a call he keeps a few spares to help a guy like you out.
I'm sorry to hear about the issues you are having, and if we can help in any way, please feel free to call.
I have gone through our database with the information provided via email, and can not find anything using the supplied VIN.
I can not recall replacing any transmissions HDJ81s at all, so that also does not help with a search.
Rod bearings are replaced rather routinely, so I can't search using that information alone.
Actual failures of the 1HD-T are few and far between, and we have only had one come in for rebuilding to date, which we have just completed are in the process of installing gauges on (Oil Pressure, Transmission Temp, Pyro/EGTs).
We can supply new engine parts for these engines at reasonable prices, and in a timely manner. If you're looking to rebuild, we can help.
If you're looking for a used engine, I have one here with 175,686 Kms on it from a ~1991 that was a decent runner when removed.
Hi John , George here . Good to see you post personally. I was in no way pointing a finger friend. I'm sure a tranny would have rung a bell in any case. But, he was selling it though lol.
Zipdoa what viscosity oil are you useing ?
Just noticing too that you have a white aftermarket oil filter. From what John at ATEB has been noticing with at least 6 vehicles now that have come into his shop, having rod end bearing failures were all using some sort of aftermarket oil filter. I have felt the weight of a wet comparable size Fram oil filter vs a new bone dry OEM Toyota filter and the Fram still feels like nothing while the OEM Toyota one has quite a bit of heft to it. Could it be coincidence??? Who knows, but I wouldn't put it to chance to save a few dollars on a filter than have a huge expensive repair down the road. He believes the OEM Toyota Filter has a valve that stop the oil in the filter from returning to the pan and stores it for cold start ups. When I bought my truck from the PO, he was using FRAM filters in place of OEM, but I had my BEBs done after I purchased it and used the OEM Toyota Oil and Diesel filters and have never had a problem even on 5000 km road trips where we would drive for 6-8 hours on the hwy with an average speed of 110 km/h.
Here's an interesting link and you can buy the OEM Toyota Oil and Diesel filters from the US for a lot less, than the raping we get from the dealers in Canada, not sure what the cost is now with the exchange rate. They use to be a lot cheaper like $12 or so dollars USD, but some of the dealers across the border have got wise and up the price a bit.
Many moons ago Pete Mac called me with a failed 1hd-t, he gave me the price of a partial rebuild, the build was extremely expensive, I found him a factory 1hd-t short block from New Zealand for less money..
On another note, he put his old oil pump into the engine and had a weird noise for some time, we talked over the phone for a year going back and forth.......it was the old oil pump. Replace pump with new when rebuilding is the name of this game..
Sad note in that story, new BEBs in the glove box when this happened.
Hm you have been running 5/40 the whole time and you had sudden be b failure. I would definitly heed the oil pump advice then. Sounds like you've got some solid vendor support with you , good luck with any route you take.

Thanks. It seems like a really good community here, I do appreciate all the feedback I've been offered.
It's tough to stay positive after owning this HDJ for 2 months, sinking $4k into maintenance, and then having the engine let go. I'm not a machinist nor a millionaire, and even Audi's/VW's I've owned in the past (2.7t's and VR6's) haven't fxxxed me like this. I will probably sell it after the engine is fixed and move on. I've read some good things about UZJ100's.
