Nice Eric!

Nice find Eric.

The more I hear about how hard it is to find a clean 80 the more I plan on keeping mine for a long time.

Pretty sure it's a PCV catch can. Not sure how well it works or how beneficial it is, but it looks nice so I will leave it alone for now. I will have to relocate the can once I get the second battery tray.

That now makes sence. I am still thinking of doing the second battery as well, just need the motivation and parts. If you sourse or find an extra early 80 passenger side battery tray let me know, I havn't checked the Otay parts yards in a while, but all were gone about a year ago.

I got my last one from CDAN. I will most likely go that route again unless I can find a used one (unlikely).

nice find, eric. lets hit the trails!

Havent seen an engine bay that clean since I bought mine with 93k pavement miles on the clock. Even a few years ago in 2007 when I was looking, I saw plenty of beat trucks. Congrats, looks like a great find!

Went with a friend today out to AB for a shakedown run on the new truck. It performed very well, but I have identified a few things to address. Here are a few pics:

Well don't keep us guessing. What needs to be addressed?

I need to do the pin 7 mod to allow unlocking the center diff in low range.

There is some occasional loud clunking noise from both the front and the rear suspension. Especially when turning the wheel, even while parked. Possibly the spring moving in the perches, not sure at this point. Any of you FOR guys have this?

I had some rubbing from the DS rear tire, primarily on the frame but a little on the flare as well. I believe I can adjust the panhard to fix this, as I don't think the PS rubbed at all.

Sliders, skidplates, rear bumper!

Nice looking find! I like the black 80's..

BTW, how was the conditions at AB?? Was it sloppy? It looks like the ground seemed pretty dry.... TIA

How are you liking the part time 4WD? What kind of MPG are you getting? I am just curious if it is worth doing on my 80.
Thanks

It's OK. Makes the front end feel a little sloppy with hubs unlocked. With them locked (and the CDL unlocked) I can hardly tell the difference. I drove home with the hubs locked and the CDL unlocked because it was raining pretty good. If I needed 4wd I just push the button instead of getting out and locking the hubs.

Only downside so far is you loose ABS, and it can get squirly in slippery conditions (rain, ice, etc). I don't think I would have converted it myself, but I bought it that way so I will enjoy it.

I am getting around 14-15 mpg so far.

My passenger front spring likes to unseat itself every chance it gets. It turns just a little bit but enough to clink around. No other noises from my suspension but it is young yet... .

Went out to Jacumba yesterday for another shakedown run. For some reason the truck felt more tippy than I am used to. Primarily when level or facing downward (front lower than the rear - e.g. going down a hill and into an off camber situation). When doing the same facing upward it feels OK. I suspect the rear springs may be pushing up too much and if the front cannot balance the truck, the rear tries to push it up too much.

Borrowed this one from Kovsky:

Most likely it is due to the weight of the ARB, once you have a rear bumper with tire carrier, it should balance the FOR set-up. Talk to Frankie at FOR and he will give you the rundown on your springs. Nice run at Jacumba, never been, that would have been a blast for me...I had the invite from Kovsky, but was just coming back into town.

I am impressed with the flex:

Took out the headliner because I wanted to do a few things.

I ended up breaking a few of tabs on the rear speaker grills because I thought they popped off like the rest of the trim. They are actually part of the headliner. I am thinking about removing the speakers and grills and installing some more lighting for the rear cargo area.

Drilled the roof and installed a couple NMO mounts. I still need to solder the coax.
