Well my little inspection seems to have turned up dry. I brought it to a local Toyota Dealership that deals with lots if older LCs. Fingers crossed they know what's up.

by chance did you disconnect the battery or fool around with the rubber intake from the air cleaner to the throttlebody?

I fooled around after the fact, but it is attached properly and sealed well. The battery is connected I pulled the EFI fuse to clear codes though.

Check the plug going into the ignition coil. Very easy to get wet and can cause funky idle issues and non-starting.

I checked it and the lead to the distributor. It's in Toyotas hands now, they suspect fuel filter. I'm not so sure on that but I'll let them do their thing and go through the troubleshooting process. I just want my daily back now.

I like Tools R Us' suggestion. That AFM connector on the intake hose is a likely culprit. I hope they don't bill you $300 to check this connector. I also like Danthman's suggestion because he's referring to another common problem. People like to yank on that pleated hose, which easily tears them on the bottom. Nobody has time to properly loosen the clamps at each end anymore it seems. Anyhow, your symptom also fits a hidden tear in the pleated bellows section - usually on the bottom where you can't see it. Those are winners.

I cleaned that connection, not sure what else could go wrong with it. I pulled the pleated intake hose off as well and physically tried to separate it but it was still very much intact.
