Long time lurker and reader of threads, first time post and LC owner.

I came from the 1988 4runner scene, full rebuilds on 22re’s and ROAR just about everything.

Picked up a 1993 LC and began my journey into the coveted world of the “cruisers”, my “new” cruiser has 380k miles and was once a beauty queen but now has a tramp stamp and dances at a seedy bar away from the lights and glam of 30 years ago.

I have began base lining the 80, first was a leaking water pump, picked up a new one from the auto parts store and 2 weeks later it was leaking from the same bottom bolt the “failed” one was leaking from, took off the new one removed the gasket and used “the right stuff” as a new system… low and behold.. leaking still and now worse. I ordered a Toyota OEM and waiting for it to arrive.. but if anyone can help me understand why the bottom bolt keeps leaking?

Some info, these cruiser have 2 alignment rings that captured the new water pump and aligns it into place, when I removed the newer water pump the second time to RTV it the ring came out.. no big deal right I just tapped it back?

Anyway, here I am waiting on a new factory pump and still can’t wrap my head around the fact that the original pump and the new pump has had the same symptoms.. an obvious water leak from the bottom bolt?

I have Inspected the pump housing and mating surface over and over again can’t find any burrs in the metal and remnants of old gaskets? Can’t understand why this is not sealing up?

Any suggestions?

I think mine was found in the gutters out side a seedy bar in vegas as well. This time last year it looked worse than yours. She has been like this for 3 months now but if i can catch a break from work over the summer I might actually get to the point where i can try and start it 🤣

Also,

You are 100 percent correct.. mine does not look anything like that.

My old cruiser is moonlighting away from the lights of the Vegas strip in a seedy bar..

Yours is getting ready for the main stage!! Looking good man!!

😉😎
Ok. I see what you are getting at now.
Are you in a position and at you convenience to measure the material of the rings that are exposed on those engine studs?

I am beginning to think my bottom stud ring has crept forward which is not allowing a flush mounting surface.

I have searched everywhere for that info.. just can’t seem to find it.

Are the studs threaded in? Double nut it and see if it will tighten back in. Then take a deep socket and tap the centering ring back in..

Use a scotch bright pad to clean up the mating surface, then wipe it down with some denatured alcohol. 😎

ok.

Long story short.. Dont buy cheap parts!

Short story long.. replaced parts store WP with the Toyota OEM and supplied metal gasket. I noticed immediately the housing on the Toyota pump was thicker by a few MM, the thickness allowed the guide ring to sit deeper in the WP then the "parts store" item, by allowing the ring to fit In its intended position the OEM WP had no shimmy and mounted flush when placed on the mounting surface.

New pump on and test drove with AC for approx an hour.. no leaks to be found.

I know better than to buy cheap items.. much thanks for all the input. lesson learned.. like an above comment mentioned.. these 80's will chew up non gem crap!

When I replaced the water pump on my previous 94 cruiser, I ordered from Amazon. It was an Aisin unit with Toyota scratched out. So I got lucky and got a genuine OEM part for $75. Glad this repair finally worked out for you. It’s maddening to do these things multiple times, but I’ll bet you can swap a water pump on a 1fzfe in short order now… 😏 🍻

I only use Amazon as a last resort. Rock Auto if you trying to save a buck ! 😜
