****The truck has sold. We're just finalizing the shipping.****

My local insurance monopoly has written off my Cruiser due to a hit and run. Damage is limited to the
rear quarter (sheetmetal, light, bumper end, mudflap). After fighting with the insurance company for a year, I managed to get a decent value for the truck. At this point I can either hand it over, or buy it back.

So, for sale is my 1990 HDJ81 VX 5 speed, with approximately 206000 km.
Details:
  • ~206,000 km original
  • factory 1HDT turbo diesel with direct injection
  • factory H151F 5 speed gearbox - shifts nicely
  • right hand drive
  • center diff lock
  • A/C with auto climate control
  • heated seats
  • power windows with new window runs
  • power mirrors (power folding)
  • power antenna
  • headlight washers
  • clear corner lights and front turn signal lenses
  • manual locking hubs in front
  • 1500 watt circulating coolant heater
  • alarm and remote starter, keyless entry
  • nearly new 33" Mickey Thompson Baja ATZs
  • factory rear spare tire carrier
  • complete new 3" exhaust with Aeroturbine muffler
  • BajaRack 3/4 length roof rack with lights front and rear
  • aftermarket bullbar front bumper
  • Pioneer bluetooth stereo with Pioneer speakers and remote
  • EGT, boost and water temperature gauges
  • factory compass and altimeter
  • sunroof
  • factory fog lights
  • IPF Super Rally 930M lights on bullbar
  • 3" OME lift
  • adjustable shocks
  • trailer hitch
  • brand new batteries
  • monsoon windows
  • LED interior lights
  • mudflaps
  • factory running boards
  • trailer hitch

Maintenance done:
  • 100% synthetic oil since purchased
  • new timing belt and tensioner
  • new alternator
  • BEBs done
  • ACSD removed
  • injectors rebuilt (July 2014)
  • front axle rebuilt with all new bearings, gaskets, etc
  • coolant system flushed
  • new thermostat
  • only genuine Toyota fuel and oil filters used
  • new glow plugs
  • new clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder
  • all new coolant hoses (turbo, etc) and clamps
  • new fuel hoses and clamps
  • new tierod and relay rod ends
  • caster correction bushings installed

The ugly (full disclosure):
  • dashpad has 3 cracks
  • clutch will need replacing - does not slip at all though
  • front brakes need caliper rebuild
  • rear brakes need pads and rotors (new parts included)
  • driver's seat needs new foam
  • side mirrors are a bit shaky - needs a teardown
  • rear defrost is not functioning
  • injection pump has a small leak at the throttle lever - I have the parts to repair
  • frame has some surface rust - could easily be cleaned and painted
  • peeling clearcoat and some minor surface rust on doors and under rear window
  • speedo is only km/h and is off by about 5% due to larger than stock tires

This has been a fantastic truck. It starts with a quick flick of the key every time. In winter, with the circulating heater on for only two hours, it will start at -40°C with the temperature gauge already near normal operating temperature and heat coming out of the vents.

I have done some very minor wheeling with this capable truck - mostly in the winter. Mickey Thompson tires are excellent all around tires in a near perfect size. Truck has never been abused offroad or on.

5 speed shifts very nicely for a truck. Cruises at 100km/h in fifth gear at 2300rpm. I have cruised the interstate at 130 km/h for hours at a time - very comfortable.

I used to tow a 2000lb tent trailer with the truck and it handled like there was nothing behind it. Loads of power with minimal black smoke.

Truck used to have 35" tires. No rubbing at all - so could easily upgrade back to 35's. I took them off because they were too big for my daily driving usage.

There are currently no comparable LandCruisers on the market in Canada. The typical asking price for an HDJ81 in Canada is $13K-25K.

I have been driving it almost every day since the hit and run. It's such a shame to take this off the road.

Asking $8k. I'm currently driving it, but as soon as I settle with my insurance company, it has to be parked.

Unbelievable that they made you write it off. Sad to hear that the fight against the monopoly didn't work out.

Ever since I read about your woes with this, I have stopped parking my HDJ on the street.

Okay, I've edited the original post. The truck will still be eligible for registration. I called out MPI on the incorrect information they gave me. All that's required to re-register will be an inspection. I'm reluctantly letting this go for sale to someone with more time than me.

That's a great deal! Especially since it's a '91. Should attract some interest from south of the border....

Dan

It's actually a '90, eligible for import to the US this summer.

Good luck with the sale Dave, sad to see it go.

#finderscuba: Sorry to hear your insurance company was not willing to help you out on this one.

Super good deal for someone though! Perfect donor truck to a LHD 80. Manual transmission is so rare!

If I purchased this can I leave it at your house till August? With proper reimbursement?

Or something creative? Can it be legally driven still? What's the closest border crossing to you?

I could ship it to Windsor and store it possibly. I'm going to see what that would cost.

Sure. I have driveway space. I'll even wash it occasionally.

Pembina, ND crossing is about an hour south of Winnipeg, FYI.

For you American enthusiasts, I may consider storing the truck until August when it is eligible for US import. Shoot me a PM if interested. The engine and transmission alone from this truck are worth $8000!

Pming you now.

Truck is sold. Just finalizing the deal. Thanks for your interest.
