Hello everyone. This is my first Toyota pickup Ive owned. Sold my 79 40 last year and planned on using the truck more often. Ive gotten a lot of maintenance stuff done on it but was curious from more experienced owners what items truck related might be good to have on hand. I am planning to do more 2 and 3 day excursions in the desert and central part of Nevada this fall and winter. I don't do any hardcore rock crawling. Just BLM type trails. The truck is running great currently. Ive owned it for about 2 years now and have put 8k miles on it and have not had any engine running issues with it. Has 175k miles on it. Timing chain was done about 15k miles ago. Just replaced the clutch last month.

Circuit Opening Relay (the one behind the right kick panel)
Belts
PS idler bearing
Thermostat
I will add to this ... after I put a huge star next to PS idler. All this stuff lives in my truck.
  • ECU/Computer (up to at least 1987 works)
  • Throttle position sensor
  • Alternator brushes
  • Radiator hoses (save the ones you pull off. Same with belts.)
  • Spark plug wires (save the ones you pull off)
  • Spark plugs
  • Fuel injector resistor
  • Fuel pump (Denso, and don't look back)
  • Radiator cap
  • Assorted fuses
  • Light bulbs (got me out of a ticket once)
  • Diagnostic wire/SST thing for pulling codes (make one!)
In addition, I also carry knuckle studs with nuts and cone washes. Extra AISIN lock-out hub. Multimeter (volt, ohms).

That is all I can think of without going out to the truck.

Tools, I carry a ratchet kit with both SAE and MM, I also have box end wrenches SAE and Metric. I typically have 2 of the same size in metric wrenches. Don't forget a breaker bar and extensions.

Thanks Pappy and Mudder. I do carry an assortment of tools. I replaced the p/s idler pulley recently but will carry a spare. Looks like I'll have to round up a pcm and tps. Can you buy a Denso fuel pump in the aftermarket?

Buy at least one extra fuel filter. Ii personally prefer either Napa gold or Wix, which yes are the same thing.

Can you buy a Denso fuel pump in the aftermarket?

You bet you can ... for a whole lot less than OEM. Google Denso Fuel Pump, or Denso parts. Denso 950-0150 is one of a few options.

Densoproducts.com
Sparkplugs.com
Amazon.com
Jegs.com

These come up for me.

If you're gonna carry alternator brushes, then you might as well get a set of starter contacts too.
I knew I forgot something.

and you thought you were gunna be travelin lighter than in the 40!!!

Not sure if it's possible but you may want to look at relocating the fuel filter. It currently resides under the lower intake manifold at the rear of the engine. It's a PITA to get to.

I just replaced the fuel filter when I did the clutch last month. So that should be good. I am a little concerned about the fuel pump though. Not sure when or if that's ever been replaced.

The reason I say fuel filter is I was on a long trip, 600 miles. I had just replaced the filter and ended up with a bad tank of gas and had to replace the filter on the side of the road.

Oh and the fuel pumps aren't known for going out on this thankfully.
