so i got good news i got the head for my car back today from a local machine shop and its fixed!View attachment 4047182
As you can see the head surface has been cleaned up and machined . into shape again, it was not cracked just serverly warped, the machinist told me it was about 6-10 thousands out of allignment which is pretty bad. and he also pressure tested it and he pulled 30inches of vacum on it and it held it for 10 minutes.

he found a section of one of the (valve guides?) its pictured below there are grind marks on where the cups sit in the head on the intake of the third cylinder from the left not sure if defect or it its been ****ed with before

Dude that's sick. Also gotta respect the fact that it looks like you are doing all of this work out on the curb side ... I'm no help now that you are in to the motor this deep, keep us posted as progress is made

Shoot it looks like I never kept track of part numbers when I first replaced belts.

Before I remove and measure my belt, quick question for anyone out there who has this motor w/ power steering and AC
*** Can you see a part number on your serpentine belt?

Otherwise based on OEM part numbers I believe the lengths are as follows:
  • Belt for PS ( vane pump ) w/ AC = 1210 MM ( approx 47.5")
  • Belt for PS w/o AC = 1110 MM ( approx 43.5")
  • It's a 5 ribbed belt

haha totally sick, gotta respect that . way to go.

For anyone out there reading and wishing they had a 40 year old diesel to wrench on, Gerrys junkyard up in Washington has one for sale for $3500.

I spoke with him today while trying to hunt down some parts. His old man died and left his old Camry Turbo D behind.... Wish I had more space in driveway and cash in the piggy bank and I'd be all over that

so is he willing to part it out?. and the guy in the pic o may carr gave is helping me out and gave me a bunch o toyota manuels, and he says he a power steering pump and bracket for me. he has to find them though

So update with the shifter. The new bushings are in, the standard 21.8mm OD bushing size for most cable shifted manual Toyotas are in fact the same size on these 80s cars despite most sites not saying it. The ones I got turned out to be delrin not polyurethane so combined with replacing the shifter ball spring the shift feel is even better than expected. The shifter still sticks side to side and doesn't want to return to center, but I sprayed some PB Blaster on the shift actuator cylinder behind the bellow and worked the stick side to side a bunch after putting the new bushings in and it's much more manageable than before, I'm gonna change the transmission fluid and lube and work it some more and hopefully that should free it up

my car will crank but not start but now my electrics dont even work anymore. no dashlights come o. i need a wiring diagram of how power gets to the dash from the fusebox

He's not parting it out yet, sounds like he wants to sell the entire car for now but that may change if it doesn't sell

Sick, nice work.... Hmmm, mine is pretty OK as far as springing back to center in neutral , not sure what would cause that. Is you linkage under the hood on transmission OK / not bound up

Scroll back a few pages in this thread and tune into the section on me diagnosing the alternator failure...Many lights on the dash are on the same circuit, I posted wiring diagrams and other info previously....

I'm not sure how much you pulled to remove / replace heads. Did alternator come out? Make sure wires are all connected and alternator is grounded / secured....You also have two little fusible links at the battery and they are brittle and old. Could have failed and would cause the issue.....Go back through this thread I also posted info on how to replace those with a modern slow delay fuse ...I will try to post links here soon

Here is where your fusible links would be in line with battery positive cable.. If you have a multimeter you can test for continuity between battery + and alternator and should peel back wire harness and inspect those wires for damage

Nice, that should help for sure especially if its the Toyota manual.. If you need any photos out of my repair book in the meantime just let me know

The transmission linkage is fine going into gear, but sticks when moving the slider in and out of the transmission for side-to-side movement. It's is better after lubing it and working it more without play in the bushings, and I've already ruled out the cables and bushings, so I'm hoping it's just bound up from not driving for however long and some more lube and movement will hopefully fix it since it's already better than before

Thank you for pointing this out, I've been just going off the sparce wiring diagrams in my repair manual and didn't realize there was a separate book. I just scored one for my Corolla off ebay for $20, hopefully that'll help me chase down my issue with the right turn signal coming on with the marker
it might be that the multi function stick for the turn lights, headlights and highbeams is broken inside im having issues with my headlights not working. the only turn on when i use the flash highbeams function. the bulbs themselfs are fine

I already checked continuity with a multimeter and it tested fine, but I need to do a more in-depth inspection to double check everything rather than just parts cannoning it since I'd rather not spend upwards of $100 on a part that may not even fix the issue. The turn signal is also constant rather than flashing which leads me to believe it's grounding out or backfeeding rather than the switch being bad. I also pulled the flasher relay and the right turn signals still came on which furthers my assumption
