Update:

1. I was off yesterday so I took the gas tank to the radiator shop (FINALLY) to get it coated. When I rolled up the guy was looking at my tank, which honestly looks like crap, and said, "I think I might have one of those tanks back there that's in a little better shape." I'm thinking, there's no way this guy has a tank just sitting around for a freakin 80 Toyota pickup. So, he walks back into the uh.. warehouse.. and comes back with an IDENTICAL gas tank. This thing looks brand new! It was still black, had no rust on it, filler hole and sending unit holes were taped up. I couldn't believe it! Aside from a small amount of sediment in the tank the thing was perfect! So, I played it cool. I said, "Wow. That's cool that you had that. How much do you want for it?" :hmm: He says, "I'll do it for the same price. $80 and I'll go ahead and coat it for you." WHAT!!?!?!?!? So, of course, I told him to go ahead and knock it out. So, in summation, I got a like-new gas tank AND got it coated for $80. Amazing.

The old tank:

(I did not get any pictures of the other tank but I will post some when I get it back next week.)

2. Went ahead and painted the rear part of the frame with some standard black rustoleum spray paint. For those that have POR15'd their frames or other parts of their truck, you probably already know that POR15 has nothing in it to protect it from UV rays. Mine has only been sitting out a couple of weeks and was already starting to oxidize and get all chalky looking.

3. I found someone to buy my FJ wheels here on MUD. So in the next few weeks I will be going to pick up some new wheels (or used?) that will actually fit. I still have the free used tires that I would like to use at least for a while so I will probably just buy some 17's so I don't have to buy tires as well. I did find some black 17x9 steelies that are 2.5" back-spacing so they would allow for the tires to sit out far enough from the truck.

4. I know I'm probably going to be ridiculed for this but I also ordered a body lift. I KNOW! Body lifts suck, I should just go ahead and do the suspension, blah, blah, blah. The thing is, when I do decide to do the suspension I want to go all out and just do the whole thing (suspension, gears, lockers, or whatever) and just be done with it. I'd like to do that now but with a baby on the way on lots of other expenses, it's just not going to happen right now. Also, all of the bolts that used to hold the bed onto my truck broke when I took them off so this is a two-birds-one-stone scenario. I get hardware to mount my bed/cab back on and get a little extra clearance for my tires.

5. Not to highjack my own thread but I also picked up a new DD/beater/sled/tow rig/whatever you call it. I had been eyeballing Tundras for a long time and the right deal finally came up. It's a 2011 Tundra SR5, D-Cab, 5.7, TRD package.

Oh Snap!

that's a great score!
I gotta start looking into a new tank.

Nice black catfish, too!

Man that tundra is a real piecer. Whatever gets you up and down the road I guess...

:)

I dont think there is any comparison to the spray paint your using and POR15 . I have used both , and can submit (in my opinion) apples to oranges .

I have done quite a few frames over the years. 10 years go I dd my first with POR15 and nothing compares .. still today , best in my opinion .

just for some referance to the pics you posted ..

5 years ago I did a frame with the POR , and I had some leftovers , so i decided to paint my rear bumper . What the hell , it would have just gone in the dump anyway .. so didnt even wash or clean the dirt off just slapped it on
Well this is 5 YEARS later

Oh the POR15 is amazing. We already POR15'd the frame but I just wanted a little extra protection. The POR15 will still be there long after the paint wears off. In fact, the POR15 with probably outlast the truck by 100 years!

The hits just keep on coming! I got my clutch today! When someone asks what I want for Christmas I send them a link...

So anyway, here it is! HD (1600lb) clutch kit for the 20R from Marlin Crawler!

At this rate, I'll be :steer: before long!!!

If you do a 2" or 1.5" body lift you won't get smacked around to much but if you go the full 3" your asking to get raped out on the trail...

Just kidding, but seriously, you will. :)

I use to run 1.5" of body lift. I just got ahold of some 3" pucks and cut them down. You couldn't ever really tell except for I had a little more room for the front tires. You do that and some decent shackles, which you can reuse when you do your real suspension and you'll be good to go.

That is actually a really good idea. I tried to order the 2" from LC but they were out of stock and the manufacturer had raised the price or something so it was going to cost more than what I originally paid. So I just told them to cancel it and I ended up going with the Rough Country 3" since it was the most reasonably priced. I might steal your idea and just cut them down to 2" though since I didn't really want to do 3" to start with.

Rough Country are good in terms of product and price, I've heard of issues with their lifespans, but for a quick fix for a couple years, you should be golden.

I looked at alot of spring options for my first gen, but none of them seemed to be a direct fit for our trucks (which is weird because the First Gen 4x4 is the BEST generation ). Many options involved a retrofit or some other mod, or settling for a mediocre product. It finally dawned on me that my truck is worth the extra to me, so I may as well have the spring shop here in town just build me a set of leaves to my liking.

Still budgeting for them, and a new 22R, but I can safely say that their offerings look alot better and more robust than stock.

What kind of price are you looking at for the spring build? I'm just curious. I was looking at maybe trying to get an Iron Man kit from ACC (haven't done any research on it yet.) I looked at the OME but the price is just crazy high. I don't see me wanting to spend that type of coin anytime soon... or ever for that matter.

It was in the 3-4 hundred dollar range, which is decent, considering that's how much I could pay for some Skycracker springs.

For a bit of body mount height triming and getting bodies to clear sliders and such we've started using these poly/plastic 1" stand off pucks from the lumber store they use to mount deck ledger boards against a house with a gap. They are the same black material as the body lift pucks except a little wider (which I think is better) and solid instead of perforated. They even have a 1/2" hole that the body mount sleaves fit through. You can stack them to the desired height and they are tapped with holes to screw them together. Then make new extended sleaves and buy longer bolts. Probably like $30 altogether. You can re-mount your bumpers with a little strap and such, or make new ones.

I already have the kit ordered so I'm just going to roll with that for now. The tank is finished and I'm going to get it picked up tomorrow. When I talked to the guy today he said that he didn't want to take the sending unit and pick-up out of my old tank since it was kinda rusty and he didn't want to damage it. SO, I'm getting both tanks back. If anyone wants a rusty tank for repair purposes, let me know. I'll get some pics when I get the tank(s) tomorrow.

Thanks. I'm off work the next two weekends so I hope to get the tank back in, fuel lines replaced or repaired, body lift on, fix the floor, and get wheels/tires on. It's going to be tough since the :princess: and I have a bunch of Christmas parties and stuff to go to. We also have to get ready to have a baby shower at our house in January.

Once I get those things done I think I'm going to bring the truck up here to the shop so I can use a lift to do the other stuff like the clutch.

Not sure if i missed it

What color you gonna paint her?

1 vote for sahara tan from that generation

ACC had one in their shop in that color that had
air lockers etc it was sweet

There has been much debate about that... MANY people have insisted that I keep the home-grown camo. The :princess: on the other hand, said she would disown me if I didn't paint it. My initial idea was to get some matte black or low gloss black and just spray the whole truck. I have a friend that has all the stuff set up at his house to do that if I choose. I really wish the PO had left it blue. Blue is my favorite color after all. Anyway, to answer your question, for right now it is going to stay camo. I don't think I will take the time to really do body work and nice paint and all that because this truck is destined to spend the majority of its motoring life in the woods and very little time on the street.
