Folks, this thread is about to get busy this week…….

Assembly time for the front using my favorite knuckle kit via @orangefj45 …. Sumo Gear.

This is the first time I’ve ever used a set of new hubs via @Racer65. The races went in perfectly as did the wheel studs and hub studs. Very nice pieces. Highly recommend.

The Sumo knuckle kit comes with rear semi float axle seals which is a nice touch and also new 54mm nuts which I love.

Dang, I’m usually ok with my half-@ss work but then I look at one of these threads and get both depressed (with myself) and impressed (with the builder). Those yellow wax line thingys remind me of the seals used on important letters .

Yea bummer. I was planning to fly up this morning and meet the guys for lunch. We started our climb out from TLH and I noticed the oil temp was abnormally hot and then almost immediately started seeing some warning lights. No bueno. We turned around and headed back to the field. It seems like a sensor because the rest of the engine temps looked fine and nothing was otherwise abnormal. The only two flights I have ever cancelled with this plane were to Memphis to see Rotunda. Oh well, try again next week.

What a great thread and even better friendships! I wish we all lived closer to share ideas and compare work.

I’ve been slacking on the updates but here’s a few pics.

To stay period-correct, we’re using a dome piston head (with larger valves and milled for compression)…

Factory dome pistons are long-discontinued, so we are using Jim C’s custom Wiseco 1.5mm over Big Boys, which we’re putting in a late-FJ60 block…

He does and I have one and maintain two others he built and there are zero leaks on any of them. Whatever he does I like it.

Is there a benefit to using a later 2F block on a top shelf rebuild like this?

Yeah the power steering taps I knew, was wondering if maybe it had different/better coolant passages or something like that.

The plot thickens LOL! There seem to be many different opinions on the right way to do this.

That is a great question. @iptman - I didn't mean to come off snarky. Just what I knew of off hand, along with some head changes. However, I too, would be curious to know if there are improvements to the 2F block over the years other than cosmetics. From what I can find in my FSM's the details are identical in a 76 2F as they are in an 82 2F.

One change I like is the threaded oil galley freeze plug in the front of the block. They started that in 1984 I think. I had one let go on me in that spot and almost lost my new engine.
