Moving on, next we moved on to the front end. pretty nasty. Grease everywhere. Couldn't really put the parts in the blasting cabinet without cleaning them first. the media costs a fortune.

P.S. By the way, any comments would be appreciated. This is my first rebuild, so comments or shortcuts would help. Thank you.

Do you have any pictures of what you started with (before the teardown)? Very nice! What was the original color you're wanting to go back to?

R083y, The only paint system used to-date POR-15. Rust preventative, plus the chasis coat designed for the undercoat. I think I will go for the acrylic enamel for the final body coat.

Let's move on. I never knew the detail MR> TOYOTA put into the shim system of the knuckles.. As we all know, we are shooting for the perfect preload on the bearings. What a pain in the arse. New shims, new studs, new lock washers, new nuts.

If anyone would like to replace the
knuckle studs, allow at least 3 weeks for Japan to ship.

Steering knuckle rebuild. . .Deja vu! That was my first major job. Truck needed brake work and I got it with some funky bizarre set of brand-x hubs that screamed out to be replaced with Warns. I thought, "Well, since I'm going there ANYWAY. . ."

Looks like you're really pulling out all the stops. Wanna do mine when your done? :D

allright, I am completely resolved to perform an original restoration on my FJ40-----no matter the cost. I have a 1" thick folder, full of receipts but refuse to account them. I have actually convinced my wife that she needs to start saving for the safari top. any comment will be appreciated.

Holy crap!! That is gonna be one good lookin ride if the beginning is any preview of what is to come. You must have one helluva shop to be able to do all that! Keep up the good work!

I got a knuckle kit from Specter, so no importation was required. It's been over ten years, so I don't remember all the gory details. I think the bearing preload was accomplished with either an old fish scale or possibly a firearm trigger-pull gauge.

Mostly what I remember is grease, grease, and more grease. I did the one side on a Saturday, and then had my OCD kick on on Sunday - I started at six in the morning, and by four in the afternoon decided it would be a good idea to have breakfast. If only I had the skills to go with my fixations, I'd have a full resto by now.
