Hi All, Based in Austalia. Im in the process of purchasing an FJ40 with a restored 2F Engine. I need to convert it to automatic for various reasons and after a bit of googling and searching in these forums it seems like its doable.

Can anybody suggest the simplest way to do this and with what transmission?

not many choices for an auto with the 2F
A440F comes to mind but it is long and most likely won't fit in the short 40 series wheelbase.

more auto choices with an engine swap

Thanks @3_puppies. Thats a shame that nothing will fit. Any suggestions for Engines that fit seamlesslely with auto trans?

I think a GM V8 with a th350 will be the easiest to squeeze in there. I run that set up and it works very well and parts are readily available. It's been a while since I looked up the adapter kits for the t-case but they were pretty common and probably still are. The worst of the work was the front drive shaft needs lengthening and the rear needs shortening. Need to adjust the t-case mount locations rearward on the frame, too.

Here’s what a GM 5.3 and 4L60e look like setting in the frame. Still have to deal with driveshafts and exhaust before I can set the tub back on. Lots of info on this swap on Mud.

Your easiest way might be to sell the FJ40 and replace it with an FJ45 or HJ47. Those you could get a transmission/ transfer case. From a later 60 series with an automatic transmission. Not sure how available the V8s are out of a Holden? Here there are plentiful. Also know some areas at least in Australia require an engine transplant has to be engineered and inspected to get it registered.

G'day! I have been thinking about this myself too. In another similar thread on this topic someone mentioned you could get an adapter plate to be able to bolt up a Chevy 350 or 400 transmission. If so, then you could even use something like the 700R4 transmission which was like having the 400 but with overdrive. That would be nice. But as someone else pointed out, with the automatic transmission being longer than the original, you will have to change the length of the driveshafts.

What part of Australia are you in? I should get you to send me some XXXX and some Bundy rum!

Sweet! I'm jealous! I wonder how much an LS + transmission are going for these days here in Florida....?

How difficult & expensive (if you don't mind me asking) was the Power Steering conversion?

Thanks

ggeorgi4 - someone in another thread sent me this today. It may help you too:

I don't know if this site has what you're looking for but thought I'd pass it on just in case.

UPDATE: Read further down their page and it seems the conversion is for the 4.5 diesel motor.

I paid $1600 for an engine and transmission with harnesses etc. It has 91k miles on it. I did hear it run but it is a bit of a gamble. Came out of an ‘02 Suburban. If you go this route make sure you source the 2wd version of the 4L60e.

Power steering wasn’t that difficult. Some cutting and welding is necessary but it isn’t rocket science. Then again, it hasn’t run yet. 😂

Thank you! Funny true story, my 1st cousin & close friend (before dying in a mountain climbing accident) was in fact a "rocket scientist" and former military. So if we went to, for example, Hooters for wings and a UFC event and the waitress said "What do you do?" He would get a BIG cheesey grin and hand her his business card that said "Rocket Scientist" on it. LOL! I would laugh and ask if a 'cool nerd's was an oxymoron?
