Been a lurker for some time now. Wealth of info on here and I appreciate the knowledge yall pass on. I own a 01' 100 & 74' FJ.....my question.

FJ was built in April of 74' and has a 4-speed. Original 1.5F blew a rod through the block and I'm trying to switch out to a 2F (87). Bought a Aisin clutch kit for the 2F thinking it would bolt up, but the flywheel & pressure plates are different and I've read I'll also need a clutch slave cylinder (throw out is much larger) to use the 2F stuff. Should I use the 1.5F stuff....clutch release, flywheel, & pressure plate or will that cause issues? I do have the 1.5F pilot & throw-out bearings in case.

Thanks

I think the general rule is use either all the 3 speed clutch parts or use all the 4 speed stuff. Inter changing parts won't work. Personally id use the later clutch parts.

Yes. This is sometimes called a "Transition Year" and lots of things are different. My 12/'74 came with the 4-speed tranny but 3-speed (deep dish) flywheel, early (3 finger) pressure plate, clutch fork and pivot, slave and slave pushrod This led to almost endless hilarity as I rebuilt the engine the first time (before 'Mud).
You can use all the clutch parts from the '74 but you have to use them all. Can you use them with a later flywheel? I'd like to say probably yes but I do not know for sure. To go with the diaphragm style pressure plate you'll need a new throw-out bearing, it's holder and it's special clips, the later clutch fork and it's pivot and the slave pushrod. Your slave cylinder might be fine.
Also; please stop calling an FJ40 an FJ.

I have a Feb 74 with factory 4 speed and 3 finger clutch. Slave cylinder on the driver side. I replaced the F with a 2F (Oct 75) and used the F flywheel, clutch, bell housing, everything. It all bolted right back on. That was in 1986, been there ever since.

IF…you are not planning on wheeling a lot, and IF you are planning on keeping the truck for a long time, switch to the newer clutch. Parts for the older clutches are slowly drying up.

To do the switch to the later diaphragm pressure plate need to changes all the clutch pieces including the flywheel. If your later 2F has the flywheel would be easier. 8/80 four speed bellhousings do not have threaded holes for motor mounts. If your not running a 8/80 plus four speed you will need the early bellhousing. Even if you have the later four speed the L brackets and crossmember are no longer cheap and easy to find. It would also require some mods to attach the crossmember L brackets to the frame. 74's bellhousing would be easier.
