This 1971 FJ40 is a beast of a machine with wonderful vintage details intact, and perfect for someone who wants a head-turning rig to cruise around town and hit the trails.

I'm not using her as much as I should, so I feel she should go to someone who will appreciate her and keep her on the road....can't let a classic like this sit in the driveway.

1971 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 info/modifications:

CA registration current, smog exempt, title in hand
Original IL6 3.9L F-155 engine
Three-speed on the column, shifts well
Working 4WD
Spring-over-axle suspension conversion lift, Rancho shocks (suspension could use work)
Aluminum rims, 285/75R16 tires
Power brakes, front disc brakes
New battery
EMPI carburetor/electronic choke
Replaced exhaust manifold/header gasket
Manual steering, rebuilt steering box
Alternator replaced
Rebuilt radiator
Water pump replaced
Stainless steel oil lines
Replaced dash cover (OEM part from Specter Off Road)
Working heater (no A/C per original specs—but ya got the kick vents and windows, old-school style!)
Custom full roll bar
Paint in original color (Spring Green)—repaint approx. 10 yrs ago
Headlights, rear interior light, turn signals not working (except front passenger side), likely a fuse box/wiring issue. Were all working until recently (fuses have been replaced). Brake lights work.
Fuel/ampmeter working; oil/temp gauge recently stopped working. Also likely a wiring issue.
Installed front driver and passenger four-point harness belts (have original lap belts)
Rear 1-passenger jumpseats with seatbelts (lap belts) (believe the seats are not original—installed to fit between full roll cage bars)
Replaced weatherstripping
Repaired hydraulics for flip-up rear window hatch
Windshield wiper motor works, but wipers aren’t installed (have OEM wipers)
Rubber floor mats
Lock box under driver’s seat
Original body decals intact
Original steering wheel, front bench seat, vinyl upholstery in excellent condition
Hi-lift jack mounted on front bumper
Minor surface rust—no major rust issues—body overall in great condition.
Odometer stopped working at ~46000 mi—I’ve put about 1500K miles on it since purchase in 2011. Otherwise miles unknown.
Have receipts for work done—all at K & H Land Cruiser Specialists (down the street from Specter Off Road)

$15,000 OBO

Nice looking rig. Great price. Good luck
Thanks! Honestly sad to see her go, and just want to put her into someone’s hands who appreciates the quirks of this particular vintage vehicle. It had the lift on it when I bought it—I’ve otherwise just tried to keep it as original as it came. It’s just so fun—someone else will have a blast tinkering, cruising and crawling! Figured this would be the community to find that person.

Really nice looking rig. It's hard to tell what the black patches are, I see them on top of the front fenders and at the rear lower corners. Is that just paint?

I actually wish I knew more of the history of the vehicle—that is, after all, part of the fun of owning these vintage rigs. I acquired it from a guy who had just traded a Scrambler for it, and essentially told me what he knew from the previous owner, who had it for a while and lived in San Diego. It seems it has spend most of its life here in SoCal or somewhere dry/warm because the body/frame is so clean and essentially rust free except for the minor surface rust that has accumulated over the 10 years I owned it. It clearly was intended by previous owners to be a trail rig, considering the lift, roll bar, hi-lift jack, larger mud tires, etc—but the last guy (who did many of the mods according to receipts and judging from how new they were) needed something bigger to fit his growing family.

The repaint (in the original color, which looking in the engine bay/glove box was Spring Green) was essentially new when I got it, but has faded down on the exterior (still mostly shiny/unfaded interior). The black patches are textured adhesive decals that were also new at that time (and could likely be fairly easily removed if desired).

The roll bar is bolted in. I do have a video of me n my buds taking her out to get dinner the other night—will dig it up 👍 Thanks, love it—only letting it go to make room for an off-road trailer for the Rubicon….gotta make sacrifices somewhere I guess 😝

Greg, you told me two weeks ago you were were selling your '72 because you lost your job due to the pandemic and needed the money and now you're after this one? People are on to your shenanigans.
