Butch, thanks for reminding me! I did get those ordered today as well.

The back up lights will go roughly where the ovals are.

Thanks, Matt

Matt, can you give us all a short driving impression of your vehicle with it's V8 installed? I am debating going the V8 route vs. putting in the 2F from my 78 FJ55 with it's 4 spd. Obviously the V8 is faster, but I was wondering how your truck drives compared to other more modern types of V8's such as GM SUV's etc.

Unfortunetely I can't compare it to a lv with the stock motor, I wish I could. I can compare it to my 77 FJ40 which has a rebuilt strong 2F in it. I can also compare it to more modern SUV's with V8's in them.

I know you didn't ask about the ride quality, but I will touch on that a bit. Compared to my 40 it is night and day. I drive my 40 almost daily and don't mind it a bit, but the lv is a lot smoother. I'm contributing that to probably the parabolic springs and a longer wheel base. But the overall smoothness of the ride is pretty damm good. I had mentioned early that I was unhappy with the leaf spring sag, and according to Lowenbrau, I might even be more unhappy once they bottom out on the helper spring.....but for now, 2 thumbs up on the ride quality.

My lv compared to my 40...as far as power, night and day difference...the lv has more;) I guess I knew it would be so that's no suprise there. I really like my 40 and the 2f, but I have had single axle trailers hooked to it with light loads and you can defenitely tell something is dragging behind it. The lv (although I'm not pulling a trailer yet) gets up on the highway and goes, very quickly I might add. I guess it's like they say, there's no replacement for displacement. I would also say it is noticably quieter than my 40, but there are a few variables there also. My 40 has 4.11 ring and pinion and my lv has 3.73 ring and pinion. My 40 also has the stock 4 spd so 4th is a 1:1 ratio. The 700R4 GM auto I have has the overdrive which is I think 27% below the 1:1 ratio, or something like that? So, the rpms on the lv are down on the highway compared to my 40, which is helping dramaticly with engine noise I suppose.

The lv compared to a new modern SUV....power is very similiar, as it should be I guess. As far as the ride quality, modern SUV is better, as it should be I guess. Even though the ride quality is pretty good on the lv, it just doesn't match up to a newer SUV. I imagine a solid axle with leaf springs in the front is the major difference between a newer vehilcle with coil over springs. I wish the engine noise was a bit quieter also, although I wouldn't consider it loud and it is considerably quieter than my 40, it isn't as quiet as a new SUV. 2 people in there traveling at 60 can talk comfortably. Overall it is still a pretty nice, quiet ride and myself and the wife are very happy with it so far.

I know you didn't ask, but I do want to make a statement on the chevy v8. I want to say that it isn't my first choice for a powerplant. I knew that I wanted more HP and I knew I was going to be doing and engine swap, but I was hoping to keep it all Toyota. But, the more I researched I soon learned that I had enough work to do and prototyping and fabbing up machined parts to wedge in something other than a chevy was going to be a lot of work. I had looked at some used Toyota Tacoma V6 drivetrains, but there was going to have to be a lot more thinking with that and a lot more precision made machine parts made. The more I looked, the more it made sense to go Chevy. Aftermarket parts are plentiful, many others have gone before me and worked out most if not all of the bugs, and chevy parts are easily available locally. So, in the end it was the lesser of 2 evils and the main reason I decided to go Chevy. Don't get me wrong, still very happy I chose this route and would do it again in a heart beat.

Hope this helps, Matt

I have never towed with cardboard but I think you might want to waterproof it somehow. Cardboard seems to get really flimsy after it gets wet. :D

I dug out some more parts for you today. Still need to pull out the convertable LV to get to the tailgate braces.

Mike, but this is some really strong cardboard. I got the cardboard with that waxy film, so it shoud be fine in moisture :flipoff2:

By the way, Thanks on the parts

I'll look forward to getting them, Matt

Matt,

The only thing i could see and you have probably already thought / considered it was the part on your bracket that is right up against your body panel in the rear. I would put a little space between the bracket and the body panel itself.

Other than that awesome as ever.

Thats exactly how I did mine. I bought the hfs bumper from ccot and added the ends like you just described after I got a warning for not having a license plate in the front.

Poster board and bondo was good enough for the body, cardboard should be fine for the bumper. ;)

Kinda off the bumper topic, but I remember your disgust with the vent window weather stripping that you purchased from $OR for about $100 per side and I noticed these today on eBay:

http://stores.ebay.com/THE-WEATHERSTRIP-STORE_TOYOTA_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ11QQftidZ2QQtZkm

Would these have worked for application. If so, it may be too late for you but maybe not for others.

Actually it was TLC and a $150 per side....and yes, I was a little disgusted with the quality for the price I paid.

Another mudder pointed those out also, but for some reason I was afraid to test the waters?? In hindsight, should have got them, I can't imagine them being any worse.

Thanks, Matt

vent window ws?

Which weatherstrip are you talking about? i don't see any listed for a FJ45 or anything that resembles the vents. They do show some vents ws for the FJ40.

Talking about the triangle weatherstripping on the front door window vents. TLC sells them for $150 each.

There is a guy on ebay selling them for $40 each, claiming they are for 45's with door vent windows. Personally I would give them a try?

yes, but if you look at the picture of what i see it is not the tri-angular one, it looks like it is 4 sided with a flat top?

I saw that also, but I'm thinking it is probably plyable enough to fit? Just a guess, but I wish I would have at least tried 1 of them for $40 bucks.

this has been a very addicting build-up thread. Great work and you had me feeling like i was in the garage with you when you cranked it over and drove it for the first time. With that being said, since the buildup is nearing an end, can you feed our addiction by writing something everytime you drive it? its gonna be hard to quit cold turkey. :)

Yea, and i am still waiting for a "driving impressions" report on the V8 install. Since so many of these guys are die hard TLC nuts with the 6cyl. i want to hear from you about the virtues of the V8;) i am really having a hard time deciding wether to install the 2F from my 55 or go V8, which will be alot more work than just moding the 2F to fit the 65 LV and going with the factory 4 spd. Could even go 5 spd if i wanted. just thoughts. a buddy of mine is trying to get me to go V8, another is trying to convince me to stay all TLC. geezz i am confused.

Still have a little ways to go with the little stuff, but your right.....the end is near ;)

I will post as much info as you guys want, including any driving reports...as long as no one gets sick of it. The wife and I did take it out to the local drive in last Sunday....that was fun, turns a lot of heads.

Have most of my steel for the rear bumper, have 1 more piece that should be here Wed. Hoping to get started on it Thursday or Friday evening and then into the weekend. I think it's going to be a solid 2 day project.....

Another car show this weekend in a different town....for some reason I want to drive it over for the day and just hang out ;p I think I should get that bumper done though while I have time....the wifes honey-do list is only getting longer :D

Thanks, Matt
