Matt - where's the car show at? Closer to Fargo? If its in GF or Crookston I'll drive up and check out the 45...

thx
Brett

Actually it's in Warroad, MN this coming weekend.....so further away from Fargo. :frown:

To bad, always look forward to talking to fellow cruiser heads.

Little done on the lv lately. Actually did a little Tuesday morning and tonight.

Tuesday morning I got all 4 of my window cranks on and my 1 door handle. I am still amazed how well those handles cleaned up with just some polish after coming out of that lv in the woods.

My bent up 1/4" steel came in today also, started working on the bumper tonight. Sorry, no pics of the actual buidling of the bumper....I stayed late after work and did it there. Did exactly what I said I was going to do, cut back into the edges and then used a jig saw to cut the radius's. I then used the acetalene torch and heated up the flat piece and bent it into the radius. Welded the seams up on the back and front and then used a flap disc and ground it down.

Took a few pics of the bumper and the exact same piece I started with...I had 2 made in case I screwed one up ;p The whitel ovals you see in the pics are the back up lights....they will be approx. 7" x 2.5" and roughly in that location. Should light up like the sun when the wife puts it in reverse! The tape roll is where the reciever hitch will be. I set the bumper on my stool, basiclly where it should end up after I make those brackets.

Hope to start on the 3/8" flat brackets tomorrow night, going to fire up the plasma cutter and hack those out.....still hoping to start drilling and bolting something up this weekend.

Matt,

Looks great. I think you will be happy with a bumper like that. I think that style looks great on the vintage.

Keep up the good work. Here shortly i have to come up with an idea for mine also.

Got about 3.5 hours in on the lv tonight, doesn't look like much but takes a while to cut this heavy stuff out.

Stayed late after work and cut the bumper brackets I wanted to make. Sorry no pics of the actual process, keep forgetting to bring my camera to work. Used the plasma cutter and chop saw, nothing fancy here but got the job done. All 4 brackets are made out of 3/8" flat stock.

I was going to make the bends on the ends before I drilled them in, but now I'm thinking a little different........Now I'm thinking of drilling them in first making sure there level. Once there bolted in solid run a string line or straight edge from the outside bracketes and mark the inside ones. That way you would know that all 4 bends would be in the same plane all the way across. Of course the outside brackets have a sharper bend so you would have to compensate for that, but overall I think it would be pretty close.

Anyway, hoping to start getting those brackets installed tomorrow night on the frame. Starte bending them up Saturday and getting the bumper made up and installed also.

This thread still gives me a chubby..... fricking luv it.

Ok day on the lv I guess. The plan was to work on the rear bumper all day, but there was a car showing going on near bye and it was really nice out.....so, of course I drove over to the show ;)

Fun day at the show, managed to walk away with a little more hadware. The sponsors had a trohpy for best of show....1 of them picked the lv???

As soon as I got home I started on the bumper. I bent up my 3/8" thick brackets first. After that, marked the holes in the frame and drilled all 8 - 1/2' dia....that sucked. I was able to bolt up all 4 brackets, used the level for a straight edge to make sure they were straight.

Got the bumper centered and set on....drilled 8 holes through the bumper to mount to the bracekt. Tomorrow I hope to get the receiver tube mounted and welded in, also the back up lights in the bumper and safety ring.

Still hoping I can get it blasted and into paint by tomorrow.

Matt,

Congrats on the trophy. Comes as no surprise to us MUDDERS, but glad to see others recognize the great work you have done.

For the bumper brackets, did you cut those by hand with the plasma cutter or do you have it set up to have a computer cut them?

Looks great!

Brian

Cut them by hand using the plasma cutter and the chop saw....no computer ;)

Pretty decent day today on the lv, about 9 hours. All of it was on bumper assembly and painting.

Not a lot of pics of the actual manufacturing process....kinda got in the zone and don't have time to pic up a camera when I'm in the mood. Got the holes cut for the back up lights and receiver hitch. Also had to make a bracket that attaches to the 2 inside frame bracket. Goes in between those 2 and bolts to the back of the receiver hitch which of course is welded to the bumper...keeps in from trying to tilt or flex up or down. I think overall it should be able to handle any weight I could ever try to pull with it.

After all that disassebled and sandblasted all parts, even though they weren't really rusty, just to clean them up for primer to stick to. Sprayed everything in black DP90LF and then sprayed the rear lower brackets in single stage black. The bumper had some heavy scratches on the curve from the flap disc so I shot a couple coats of ureathane primer. That sat for a few hours then I sanded out with 220. Going to shoot another coat of epoxy on top, but shoud be good to go for silver pewter paint after that.

After all that I thought I was done and then I thought......I forgot to weld my chain hooks on???? No big deal, wasn't in paint yet so welded those on before I called it a night. If the bumper looks good after a coat of primer should have paint on it tomorrow night also. Hopefully be bolting it all back on Tuesday evening.

Couple other pics, friend of mine dropped off a 75 vette this weekend. Asked if I could make a dash for it. Nothing real fancy, but wants it to look clean and has a lot of gauges. He wants removeable pods for each gauge or a cluster of guages. Going to be streetable, but is using it for a drag car. So I'm sure I'll have to start working on that this week a bit....wife has my next weekend booked solid :)

No, no, no....that vette is way too complete for your next project. I think you should build an FJ45 lwb truck, but with lomusass's tub on your own stretched 40 frame. Shoot, lomusass might even stretch the 45 body for you so your stretch legs can get in under the wheel and work the pedals. ;)
Seriously, the prices are pretty reasonable, and you'd spend a lot less time on something like that than what you just did rebuilding this entire body from scratch. I'll send you photos of how the 45 frame is factory stretched from a 40.

if the lpb frame is really a mod'ed 40, then it should be no big deal to re-create the same thing. at least not for Matt that is. heck, give he a rusted one just to make it a little more interesting for him. :)

Not a whole hell of a lot done tonight on the lv. Painted and bolted brackets on.

I did come home for lunch and shot a coat of DP90LF on the bumper again, just wanted to go over the top of everything I sanded with 220 and cover a couple bare metal spots I sanded down to.

Sprayed a couple coats of single stage urethane in silver pewter I had mixed up a while ago, I think the rear bumper looks pretty good? Should look fairly factory when it's bolted up, and functional. Bolted the brackets onto the frame....I wish I had a better camera so you could see more detail. Maybe I'll take a couple pics when it's bright out or try a different setting.

Paint should be dry tomorrow so I should be bolting the bumper back on. I am going to use a 1/2" Stainless steel carriage bolt to bolt it on. That way the head is round and flush and kinda matches the bumper. I plan on turning the square portion of the bolt down to .500" in the lathe. Even though it doesn't have the square I still think it will catch and tighten.
