Nice welds !
respect-048.gif

Yes sir! I would love to lay claim to them but I just can't. It will take me another year of welding (a guess) to get mine looking like this. I know an out of work certified welder so he is doing the welding for me. I am doing everything else in the fabrication on the frame thus far. I prep it, he comes over and burns it on. I then clean it up.

It is not my truck and I simply can't justify anything but top notch welding. Since my welds suck compared to what you see, it has to be done by somebody with more skill than me. Not the truck to learn to perfect your welding on if you know what I mean!?

you have it right, no load on the springs and they seem short.
we had some head scratching on the 70 refurbishing yesterday when we put the original springs back under the bare frame. something just didn't look right.
go out measure the othe 70 i have here, compare. same.
once the body and engine is sitting back on then it will all look and function properly.
it does give the heart a bit of a kerthump for a moment, eh?

enjoying this thread.

Oh I knew they would be short with no load on them but not this short! They are going to have to flatten out nearly 4" to get the shackle angle right. This being a SBW and a soft top truck it just doesn't have a lot of weight on the rear. However, I am not jumping the gun yet and really won't know how it will sit until everything is on the truck.

I put in a lot of hours on the Patrol today. It doesn't look like much in the pictures because it was all slow detail work!

I added some new 3/8" drain holes directly behind the leaf hangers.

I ground the #2 cross member weld back all the way around with the die grinder...

I also worked the top of the #2 cross member a lot today, flipped the frame over, I didn't do it on my back!

We are going to weld all the way around the #2 cross member again and then grind it back again. After that work it with the sander along this edge. Point of all this is to make it look like a stamped out section like it was stock on the truck.

Cheers

same here, a BJ70 SWB vehicle and the rears seemed REALLY short.
the mounts were factory
the springs came off this truck
some serious head scratching happened

it gives you a moment of pause and confusement.

i love the build, nice work.

Thanks Wayne! I enjoy your build threads too and the random pictures of hotties is a nice touch! Perhaps I should do that since the pictures now are getting repetitive !?

Soon though the frame will be done and I can move onto suspension and axles. As a result, soon the pictures will change!! :D

Alrighty some non-frame pictures!!

When i got home from work today the fuel tank and wheels were sitting here. Sand blaster guy dropped them off today.

The fuel tank looks really nice! This is the smaller early style fuel tank which is correct for the 64.

And the stock skid plate for the fuel tank...

a couple small dents to fix in the skid but overall it is in really nice shape!

Stock 16" wheels looking real nice...

Some super hot goodies from my super secret contact in Colombia! I hope you get my sarcasm! It is all unobtainium though unless you know people in the far corners of the earth! Stoked to be getting these for the truck...

very nice!

Last night I really got some things done too. I finished packaging up all the items for chrome, zinc and cadmium plating. it has taken a fair amount of work to get this all in order because I have had to dig through box after box of parts to find items and then pick from the many duplicates of items which are the best parts. Sending off three boxes as soon as I get a chance. I also went through all my boxes of rubber parts. I picked out every single piece of rubber for the truck I have that was at least halfway decent. I have it all packed into a 5 gallon bucket soaking in some very mild soapy water. After this I am going to pick out the best of it and clean up with a wire brush. Then I need to figure out the best oil to soak it all in. I would like to soak all the rubber parts in oil to try and breath some life back into them. Just unsure of what type of oil right now, ie mineral, vegetable, petroleum, ect. Any suggestions!? I was actually pretty happy with what I found for rubber, not surprised I have it though as I kept the best from a good 5 Patrols I parted out or sold. I also started separating a lot of parts into boxes for painting body color, gray (not much of that) and black.

Cheers!

The last of the frame repairs got finished up yesterday. A new battery box has been made and is done. Twelve to fifteen of the wire harness tabs on the frame have been replaced too.

I still have got to finish up the # 2 cross member but I need some specialty grinding hardware for that. Small flap wheels and discs have been ordered to I can get into the tight areas around the cross member.

It is a good thing I don't have a :princess: ....

There is a lot of rubber on these trucks, much more on a hardtop. Few duplicate or spare items here and a few not shown but this is the majority of it. Pretty big stash and collection of rubber here as you can see.

Wondering what to use on the rubber bits to restore them. One guy on another forum suggested silicon spray and another guy suggested wintergeen oil....some quick google search on wintergreen oil turned up this,

and it would seem peanut oil works well for plastic restoration...

So looks like wintergreen oil is the way to go!

Great thread
Fun to see something different.
Wintergreen oil is great stuff, used it on a bunch of old Honda carb boots, amazing results.
Keep up the good work.

Not to hijack but i saw this the other day and was curious...i need an interpreter...

Not really my style at all and not to knock it but I don't like it. I thought "CA" meant Central America but I suppose it is Canada. Canada got a good amount of old Patrols but they are pretty rare up there these days. Nobody really knows if Canada was included in that 2616 sold, meaning if that number applies to N. America or just the USA.

I play around sometimes and search Colombian "autotrader" type sites. As you can see lot's come up. Anything 1980 or newer that has the old school body style is a LG61 which is extremely rare anywhere besides Colombia. The G61 is a fusion of the later 160-series and the older 60-series. They have the old school body style and frame but have the 1980's Patrol P40 engine, 4spd trans and axles. IMHO, they are the cream of the crop for old Patrols. Reason being, you can swap in a 1980's 5spd, fit power steering, mount front disc brakes, do some off the shelf mods to the engine or swap in an SD33T diesel and you can lock and or re-gear the axles. All using bolt on 1980 Patrol parts, you can't do this with pre-80 Patrols because everything mechanically is different. The G61's were the last of the old Patrols and were what Nissan offered to compete with the last of the FJ40s. They were made from 80-84 and my educated guess is less then 5,000 were made worldwide. Colombia got the large majority of these. Greg Mushro imported one from Colombia that looked nice and mint ( I say looked because I know the guy's reputation) and he sold it for over $35,000 iirc. A fellow Patrol owner I know spotted it after the new owners had bought it. They didn't even know what they had or bought, they just bought it because it looked neat and cool.

Any ways, your hijack got me blah'ing on! Here is a few of those Colombian websites, Panama also has one I search sometimes but old Patrols never come up on it that I have seen even if they do exist in Panama.

Thanks, good info about the patrols. Yea not my style all ober but nice to see one anyways.
Yes wayne, i guess they are almost as bad with rust as eastern canada eh. I think the only thing for me is a resto'd 40 from southern ststes or something let me know if you see a nice one!

saint georges, Quebec

expect hidden rust issues.

Well they did delete the kick vents so that is a big sign of hidden rot with bondo on it.

Got some good hours logged on the Patrol since my last (photo) update. The #2 cross member has been welded 3x now and ground back 3x. Third time looks like a charm as now you can hardly even tell it is welded on. Going to finish off all the wring harness tabs on the frame rather then leave half of them stock, got 8 more to replace. As soon as the #2 cross member is all sanded back and finished up I am going to paint the inside of the frame. After this it is simply prep it for chassis black, paint and time to assemble!

Already posted tons of pictures of the frame and #2 cross member so not going to post any more until it is 100% complete.

Oh ya, and we are building a new winch cage for the PTO winch. Going to be pretty basic and replicate the stock ones for the most part but be updated, stronger and look better.

Cheers

Alrighty, so the frame is pretty much done. At this point just sanding it back to at least 120g where needed in prep for paint. Going to paint the inside of the frame in the next few days. This will be the last round of pictures of the frame before it gets paint.

There used to be a big huge ugly tow hitch welded to the back bumper. Not easy to remove or clean up but it has come around.

The patches for the body mount outrigger are done, paint will hide any of the last imperfections.

Details on the #2 cross member we made. I am happy with how it has turned out. Lot's of hours put into this thing but I think it looks good.
