Got a few things back from blast and primer today...

They did a good job, but I wasn't expecting to find little pinholes blow through on the doors

And to think they were not even visable before blasting....

Well i finally got my engine started..

It started out kinda tuff getting all the wiring set up right and i also set up my oil pressure, water temp, and tach hooked up so I could watch over teh engine as it broke in..

And did I mention that I started it the first time with no exhaust manifolds on :D

It was cool watching it shoot flames out, but I got worried that I was going to burn the wires and such so I found some old ramhorns to through on there..

Once I got the timing set she starts as soon as you touch the key, My timinglight showed it was at 6 degrees, not sure what is normal for my 400

Got scared a few times because I started hearing some terrible screaming sounds, luckly it was only the Power steering pump asking for some more fluid..

The oil pressure is real consistent at 50, but the water temp still worries me a little.. I get started and run her up to 2000 RPM and she was running around 210 degrees, I put a fan blowing on the front the radiator and that brought down to 190 degrees..

Would running distilled water instead of antifreeze cause the temp to be higher???

I'll get some pics tomorrow, forgot the camera (too excited about starting her)

Nice work, thanks for sharing the build up; that'll be one sweet 40 when all said and done.

Awesome thread. Coming together real nice! Don't you dare stop posting till ya done, lol.:D

Do you think you could give a general price run down as things get ticked off from your "to do" list? Give us all an idea of what sort of budget is required to take on different bits. Thanks:)

Do you have a final goal with this truck? Or is it just going to evolve?

great looking build! for summer running you should use a shroud, although my low power doesnt seem to need one on the street.
i have found that it does get a bit hotter going slower. also, you dont want to do this for winter running, but the best texas summer mix is 10% antifreeze-90& water. also you can run water wetter additive to lower the temp even more.

as far as timing, initial on a small block (no vac) is about 10-12 degrees. total about 36. believe my 350 is set at 12--no problem starting, ping, etc. good luck. by the way just picked a 93 caprice today mainly for the accessory drive system. where are you going to put your battery?

My main goal is to have a moderate offroader and a nice cruising around town vehicle..

Probably going to do some trail rides and such with her at least until I decide to put an Orion in and upgrade the front axle..

As for how much everything cost I'am too afraid to add it all up ;)

Cool, going to go with a shroud for sure..
Still scared to go with a electric fan, today when I come to a traffic light in my dodge my A/C goes out,, turns out the electric fan for the condensor coil was bad

My SBC has vaccum advance, but she starts good so if Iam off probably not by much

As for the battery I wish I did know where to mount it, the PO had it in the cab ..

Most of my engine compartment space is on the passenger side so I think it should be able to mount somewhere over there

With a winch, some lights and the rest of the cruisers electrical I think I may need to run dual batteries????

Which is twice as scary

i really have to applaud you for putting the stock seats in ...they are badass

Holy crap! I didn't know there was a build going on around town. I'll PM you my info and see if you need a hand.

Cool

What's your cruiser color

I have only seen a couple around town, a red w/ some lights on the windshiled frame and the one that sits on Ocean Dr.

I moved here a year ago and haven't driven my 40 very much. Mine is red and we also have a '99 100 with a TJM bumper on the front. I live on the south side off of Rodd Field.

I have been slowly getting little parts and such back from powdercoat and now that I have got them all back I decided to organize today..

So I went ahead and shot some pics will I was doing it..

The 3 colors that they used overall were: A silver/chrome color, White, and Black..

In these pics I have the gauge cluster put back together with the newly coated panel..

The side mirror assemblies w/ stainless hardware..

And the wind vent inside flap and the piece of metal with it that has all the studs..
