I am a bit apprehensive about sending $7,000 for an engine I can't see and know nothing about the seller. I would really like to drive a 1hd-t to see if I like it that much better than my 6.2. On paper the engines are about the exact same as far as power. They are both around 160 hp and 250 lb torque and from what I have read the 1HD-T in an 80 doesn't get much better than 20 mpg either. But, I am guessing the 1HD-T might just feel better. The only real complaint I have with the 6.2 is all of the rattles and vibrations that have developed because of engine. It might be that any diesel would do the same thing when swapped into a 15 year old vehicle but I am assuming the 1HD-T would be a smoother, quieter engine.

I think you need to fly to where-ever you need to go to testdrive an HDJ80.

The cost is pretty minimal considering what the swap will add up to. If you don't get the test-drive, you'll be second guessing yourself the whole way through.

Figures from aussie drivers suggest the HD power 80's use 2-4 litres less per 100km than the chev V8's.
Are there any BSFC plots or fuel consumption charts for your engine?

Still considering the 1HD-T conversion but have a question about axle ratios. Do the diesel equipped 80's come with the 4.11 axle ratio? If they come with 3.70's I could have a problem. What rpm's does the 1HD-T like to cruise at? Is there anyway to get a 3.70 ring & pinion?

Dougal, I would love to test drive an HDJ80, I am hesitant to jump on the 1HD-T simply because I love my 6.2 so much. The only thing I don't like about the 6.2 is the noise and vibrations which I think I can solve in another vehicle. The engine isn't really that loud, I could set it up quieter but it gets better performance with a more open exhaust and intake so it is a trade off. I can also use different engine and trans mounts to dampen most of the vibrations. Again it really isn't bad but sitting at lights things start to vibrate, the shifter, rear view mirrors etc. Things I could fix just haven't gotten around to them yet.
I am still torn, I could do another 6.2 for about $2,000 less than the 1HD-T, the performance numbers are about exactly the same, the parts are available everywhere for the 6.2 and inexpensive, it is easy to work on, I know and am beginning to understand the engine, I really like the big V-8 feel, and it is indirect injection so it works great with WVO.
But...... I would also love the Toyota reliability, smooth quiet engine, stock looking engine compartment and everything else that I think goes with the 1HD-T. Also the fact that it will bolt in is a big plus. But with that said, Marks 4 wheel drive has new engine mounts listed for the 6.2 that I think allow you to bolt it in as well, you can even get a bellhousing adapter and use the Toyota automatic.
Decisions, decisions!

About my previous axle ratio question. I found out the HDJ's came with a 4.1 ratio just like the FZJ's. The 1HD-T max torque comes at 2,500 rpm and the 6.2 is at 2,000, that would put the cruising rpm about 500 rpm higher than the 6.2 so I would be fine with my current set-up.

I found the information on this page
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER Data Library
Something is strange, 1,400 seems too low from the other diesels I have researched.

1400 does seem too low, but 2500 is certainly too high.
AXT have a pointy graph showing peak at 2000rpm (they compare their 1HZ turbo kit to a 1HD-T).

What you really need to find is a torque curve, figures are too easily corrupted with typos.

Max hp is 170 PS@3600 rpm
Max torque is 38.7 kgm@2500 rpm

specs from toyota.

rpm makes total sense since the truck is turning 4.11s with 31" boots from the factory with a 0.85 OD...

if you are running the manual tranny then the 3.7s would be MUCH nicer for a highway vehicle. the manual HDT in an 81 is screaming at 120 k/h where as the auto loves 120 and will be screaming at 150 k/h

but what do i know, i only do this for a living...

I assumed the max torque had to be pretty high when I noticed (as you mentioned) the axle ratio, transmission and tire size. It is going to be turning around 2,300-2,400 rpm at 70 mph, that is alot for and engine with a max torque at 1,400 rpm. Either way I was happy to find that the transmission and axle ratio is the same on the diesel and gas models, one less thing I have to worry about. I have a computer for the A442 transmission on my 94 that I am not using since the 700R4 I installed does not use it so I should be good with that. I am going to run 33" tires so that will bring the rpm down about 100 rpm, should be nice on the highway I would think.
I guess my main question before I put $7,000 in the engine, how smooth and quiet is it? Since my only complaint about the 6.2 is noise and vibrations how much better is the 1HD-T?

picture a gasser with a 'tick' and you have the idea... most of us get asked all the time if it really is a diesel.

smooth? once again picture a smooth gasser and you are in the ball park...

the difference is ... ummm... a corvette vs a chevette??... both get the job done, one is so much nicer to drive...

with the auto you will be a happy camper...

Very smooth and only a little noisier than a petrol 6 cylinder. Very impressive noise levels for a direct injection diesel, quieter than many indirect injection motors.

Those are the answers I was looking for. The 6.2 is really a fun engine though, I love the big V-8 feel and sound but at times (like at drive through windows when you have to turn the engine off so they can hear) it is really nice to drive a smooth quiet engine. I love the stock FZJ80 but from what I have heard the 1HD-T has much better power and gets better mileage, plus I can blend a little WVO and bring my cost per gallon down even more. I am trying to find a way to keep both, we will see?

whenever I fill up (all full service here)
they don't believe me when I say diesel, and insist on smelling the gas cap, shrugging their shoulders, and filling up with diesel.

it is a very smooth/quiet motor
