Didn't have a chance to go to Toyota today, however my fiance was just out playing with the truck.... the immobiliser light continues to flash when the key is in the ignition. According to the manual it should go off once the key is inserted.

Now the bad news... when I purchased the truck 5 years ago the dealership only gave me one key, and guess what.. it's NOT a master.

Tried to call the dealership, they are no longer in business....

Is there no way to get another Master key!?

Found this.... and this...

Toyota Immo Reset

I'm wondering if you guys think it is the key itself based on the flashing, or an issue with the immobiliser?

If it is the immobiliser I wonder what we were doing successfully that was causing it to function???

Just posting the information incase someone else comes up with this same issue. Will let you know what we figure out. Thanks for all your help so far guys.

Also found this on another forum:

Car Alarms: Toyota Lancruiser Immobiliser, toyota lancruiser, alarmtek

Another post I found... hoping these might help someone else. We've been going around with this issue for a year!

Question
Following a flat battery my Landcruiser (2000, Amazon petrol) now shows a flashing "key" indicator on the centre dash.
The handbook says this shows that the immobiliser has been activated.

The engine will crank but will not start.
The only suggestion from a local garage is to tow it in... don't fancy that without power steering and brakes!

Any ideas would be very gratefully received.

Answer
As much as I would like to provide a silver bullet
idea here, the trouble is the immobiliser is set,
and to bypass it is not going to be possible without
the diagnostic/reset machine at the Local Toyota shop.

When we go to bypass these ignition immobilisers
for remote start, it is done buy tricking
the ignition into thinking the key is in the ignition,
and would allow for the remote start.
Trouble in this case is that the immobiliser thinks
the system was breached. Even when your key is inserted.
Ergo, tricking it into thinking the key is there
is moot.

They need to reset the system by code, run through
the diagnostic plug under the dash. At least that's
the only way I know of to get around this issue.

It can not be removed. And as far as I know this
truck does NOT have an aftermarket alarm,
starter kill, or chip/key type add on
immobiliser because of the key indicator
in the dash, or I culd offer more suggestions.

I wish I could have solved it for you, but
unfortunately, this one needs to go into the shop,
or, better yet, Toyota should send out a tech to simply
reset it by computer. Best way to go.

Sorry about that.

Do you have a remote start on your LC? Don't know if it would help...but have you tried disconnecting the + battery terminal and letting it sit unconnected for 15-20 minutes and then reconnecting the battery terminal?

I'm going to go try that right now. If it does start would that indicate that it's the alarm or the key? Oh and no we don't have a remote start.

Not sure. Do you know the history of the missing master key?

The light continues to flash because you are not using the master key, if it was a master key the light would go out immediately. I had a similar problem in that the LC I bought only had 1 key and it was not the master.

I called around and found a locksmith who routinely goes to auctions and cuts keys from VIN's, as many cars come in with no keys. I brought my car to him, he called a friend at the Toyota dealership and was able to cut me a master from the key code they gave him over the phone. (The master is a different cut than the valet.) He then plugged in a device underneath the steering wheel to reprogram the keys.

He had a little trouble at first and was getting the same response from the car as you had provided, car turning over but not starting.

Got it to work and also reprogrammed my valet key to master. He originally quoted me $400 to do this which included a remote door lock fob and key. He did not have the remote fob at the time so I just took a standard master key and total charged was $65. A Steal!

Help me understand...what flashing light that is meant to go off are you referring to?

Red light looks like a car to right of clock, center console on a 2000. Flashes when key is out as long as battery has juice.

Did you find out what the solution to the problem was? We have the same problem with our 2001 Land Cruiiser. One Toyota dealership said it "may" be the main electrical panel and it would be $3,000 to find out, hmmm.

No we didn't figure it out yet. The dealership has the truck again. It seems to start every time it is towed, and they are telling me they can not diagnose it while it's starting.

They originally told me earlier in the week that they would make me a new master key. Yesterday they called and said they would have to replace the ECU to get me a new key. We knew better because of the bulletin I posted on here earlier so we called Toyota directly. They called the dealership, and now they seem to be changing their story. So frustrating!

Now they are having someone else look at it. My fiance is on All Data looking up other information. He's been directed to the transponder key coil.. he's checking on that now.

We're pretty frustrated, and annoyed at this point.

Is the stuff replaced like EFI relay all OEM?

In the past I've had bad luck with non-OEM efi relays. know better now.

Regarding failure of engine to start with symptom of fuel pump not running, I suspect your crankshaft position sensor is going. Did the dealer perform a test of the sensor? That's an easy resistance test using a multimeter. Also check the camshaft position sensor.

It looks like they finally did find a code, it was the key! They were able to make me a new master key without replacing the computer... thru a locksmith! Not Toyota. I just got the call that it's running well now and the code has disappeared. So hopefully that's it. Will keep you posted if anything else happens, but so far everything points to the key.

:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

It is about time they figured it out.

I guessed the Key on the first day of the post and I am a total newbie. Only had my cruiser for maybe 2 months.

Sounds like exactly what this guy said. Glad you figured it out.

c Dan has info on a corola(?) key that has the transponder in it (Minus the door lock buttons).
I have one for when I go fishing just in case it should get wet, it also makes a good loaner key.

Camry key part # #89785-26020

Every 100 owner should have one: About $35 from CDan or Onur (Onur is full time now at American Toyota ABQ...and provides the same discount under CDan's watchful eye ;)) Once you go through the key programming sequence and get it cut to match it works perfectly. You do however, since the Camry key isn't an RF type key, insert the key into the door to lock/unlock. But the key is tough as nails. After tiring of the lame RF OEM key(s) I now have the Camry key on a keyring along with just the RF/remote "fob" portion of the key (sans the metal key portion) and it works great.

I take mine to Home Depot for the key cut...they never charge me since per HD they don't sell me a blank so they can't charge me for the cut.

This eBay seller is selling that model number key as compatible with all these Toyotas. I'm sure some of it is not fully accurate but it sounds like a lot of Toyotas share the same key.

Toyota Land Cruiser 1999-2004
Toyota Sienna 1999-2004

I'm not up for a $350 experiment and Onur/CDan didn't know whether or not it would work, but it would be really neat if the RAV4 (like our '07) could be programmed to function. About the most robust key I've seen...

In my 99 4Runner Limited, the key would go into the ignition of my 00 Cruiser. The Limited 3rd Gen 4Runners have the built-in transponder in the head of the key. I don't know if the seperate remote could be programmed for the Cruiser though.
