Anyone know where to buy tube doors for an FJ40?

good luck. if you find someone that actually makes them and sells them regularly for the FJ, please let me know and post up here. I posted this exact same question here on 11.1.05 and got no joy as I want them badly for safety. lots of deadends on this topic...

-www.shaffersoffroad.com - I called them, they only ever made 2 sets of those FJ doors as custom orders
-A.O.R. website has been offline AND I called the # and it is disconnected - I read doors not for FJ models - they don't have best rep either so maybe out of biz
-I do not have skill to make them myself.
-places that make them in volume for Jeeps (a dime a dozen), do not for the FJ
-Man-A-Fre rumored to make them at one time, no more.
-Marlins only makes for newer model Toyotas
-Worldwide OffRoad Tube Doors - never made it to production
-Ehsan is trying to dig up some photos of a paki design they did for the FJ - will post when get

The idea has been floating around over here... I was thinking about mocking something up on my FJ40. Of course the body is tweaked 1/8" off on the passenger side ;p

Those are Worldwide OffRoad Tube Doors. They were a prototype and never made it to production as with many WOR products. I could ask the guys if they would be interested in reproducing them.

EDIT: WOR has expressed an interest in manufacturing these doors again if I can line up a few orders. We are not 100% on a price as of yet but if anyone is remotely interested please PM so I can see if these will go into production.

hmm...

for me personally, not that I can build them mind you, I am not very into their design. I just do not dig some of the 'aesthetic' components of their design as compared to others I have seen: the blocky/bulky handle setup, the tubing layout design itself, the overall door size is larger than I would want. I really like the style of the Shaffers model or the A.O.R. model... so I would not likely buy this one as I have seen tighter designs I like that still accomplish the goal.

just my .03 cents worth

How about making tube doors in this shape? I've always been a fan of how Jack makes his half doors. I think it could be done easy enough in 1.5" tubing, and then using a door mechanism similar to the best top half doors.

I have to half doors for my FJ40, they are a steel frame with black netting in them, made by Deist. I have never seen another pair, but they sure look simple to build.

Ditto what wantatlc wrote.

Nat: do you have pics?

I can dig them up, they did not have any handles when I got them, but I used bungee cords to hold them closed :grinpimp:

what kind of latch system would be best for a tube door?
something like a soft top latch? (universal)
or is there something specific to use?

how about hinge mounts?
something that bolts to the hinge, without taking the pins out?
or take the pins out?

personally -

I think a latch system as seen on many soft doors (SOR, Best Top, Kayline) is the way to go if I had a choice - but out of metal and not plastic. I know some use a drop in pin as the latch (which would be stronger for sure and take a hit better), but that does not seem daily driver friendly and apt to be lost in some way? secure (not in the sense of locks mind you - but will stay shut), not bulky, 1 hand operation.

here is the Shaffer latch system - simple and not much to it.

though it would not work for the FK since we did not have that striker plate, but it could be provided as part of the kit. only issue is, which is why Kayline went away from something similar, is that it sticks out to far and jams you in the side (I know, I have a scar to prove it).

As for pins/hinge, I like the idea of a pin that can be pulled and just uses a washer and nut to secure. As I would run these year around, I would not mind that setup to bolt them on. My current door hinge is a half hinge (a portion of each hinge - top and bottom opposite of each other - is cut off).

I could see a system like current softdoors where it is like a half pin aimed down welded to the door that sets down into the current hinges on the rig. seems a little weaker, but the best que from the soft door market is make them function soley from the door. Meaning, not having to do anything to the hinge but slide on your door and put on the striker plate.

Remember that pair run is a prototype.

fair enough...

these are some cool designs that fit what I personally like in the tube door concept (1.5" tube). I also like the idea of being able to attach a pad and/or netting. much better protection than no door or a softdoor (what I run) with the same benefits (and then some).

- best design to me.

I started discussing to Mark about making a prototype set, we'll see what happens when he gets back from Rubithon.

He always wanted to make some tube doors for the FJ40, and I need a pair because my feet like to come out of the door in a near roll over situation.
