well,
my 74 lives. I have logged about 10 miles so far, and it shall be easier once the license plates are renewed (I need opacity smog test). As major project that included switching from vacuum 1.99 t-case to stick 2.81 Mark's gearset & the entire engine conversion, it's been off the pavement since September.

requirements,

first: An exhuast will allow me to hear (and smell less) of whats going on with the turbo etc. I have HDJ7X head pipe, but nothing else.

second: I need to get the bias ply tires so I can hear the Mark's gear whine when cruising. This is a new design gearset with mark's idler shaft (some install issues/holdups) may calm down in 2,000-3,000 miles as other owners have said.

third: for safety, I need to hook the dual boost/pyrometer gauge up (plumbed inside cab, but no mount bracket yet).

(fourth, the Greg B/Sheldon W supplied cable lockers and Belton kit have to be installed in Susanville in the shop of Icky Racing Diesel asap)

comments,
fast, very freakin fast (faster than 2005 tacoma 4 door). circa 1991 HD-T original boost in J74 (4.11's, right now I have ENS/bias ply on the truck). hella fast compared to the 13B-t. Seems to come into a second power band at 3,200 rpm (a little kick then).

You know, the 13B-T was ok, ran well, but lacked the redline to go much above 80 mph on Arizona freeways and could climb hills, but took effort (outstanding off road and sipped fuel). The HD-T has been a desire since the dinosauer (45 wagon w/ hd-t) began and died (rip 1998-2002).

personal thanks to:
Jeff "icky" Bryant (top billing)-Icky Racing Diesel

Brian Downey- ENS
Michael Keys -Sydney City
Mark Koback -ENS
Maarten -All American
Greg Riemer -Flatlands
Dave Stedman -Instument supplies division Nippon
Sheldon Walsh - G&S
Todd/Greg -AAIE

and Thanks to Toyota for making the parts for this project, but rescind this 'honor' because of delays with deliver and no help from TMS-Torrance/Ontario (you could and still can make this truck and give it to general public in favor of the FJ)

and A.N. who wishes to forvever remain anonymus

in sum, "I would not have it any other way"

Congratulations, Rick! A job well done I'm sure. I can only imagine that a well tuned 1HD-T would make a BJ74 chassis just fly. I can't wait to read your reports of on/off road performance.

Enjoy...please post pics when you can...and many

I, am internetally challenged and cannot post photos. I will send them to some sucker to post. I have only 3 photos prior to conversion, and obviously can take more now.

Very cool. Thanks for the props. Nice that it is Toyota in Toyota...

LOL! Send them to me and I'll post them up for you. I would be more than glad to! :D

Congrats, Rick. Wow, it only took six months (for a busy guy like you) :D

Stedman.

I knew some Steadmans' in school and they were louts.

sh$%^t-

Dr. David Tay also was on the thanks list, but when removing "mr." prefixes in an early version his name was omitted.

DT has been a great help with this conversion, mainly supplying the ENGINE, which would have been a hard conversion without.

thanks wayne-

I still need to troubleshoot everything for a long haul. Injection timing, valve shims, etc, need to be worked out. My first trip has to be to nor cal to install the lift and cable lockers. Riemer and I got the truck years ago on a fluke- GR had asked if we liked a truck how to pay for it? and the buyer in japan bought that truck that had been in the originating email. Those were the good ole days when we were getting bj74's offered everyday. Other than a pto, it had nothing trick about it. semi float rear, 112K, a rust spot above left wheel well (no worries in dry az). I have a set of 78K cable lockers and a belton kit to get put on at Icky's.

For those that did not notice,

hzj7X parts:
used alternator 24v
apron (new)
air cleaner can
washer bottle
rhd ps cooler/hp line
radiator (plastic late model)
used instrument cluster w/ cable lock hzj tach (dr. stedman)
motor mount frame brackets
vacuum hard pipe on inner fender and clutch boost tank
rhd a/c lines off compressor
h55 transmission + bellhousing
wire harness pieces
...and yet to install, rear heater hook ups (non north am, non aussie parts, ugh)

hdj78/9 parts:
clutch
fuel filter/prefilter rhd systems
fuel tank pick up
firewall fuel line and first frame (only pick-up troopie available)
turbo accordian pipe
air cleaner top
turbo hot side outlet
primary head pipe (uses donut/spring compression mount)

(I would have liked the combo vacuum/water cooler line behind the water pump, but it would have taken too many weeks to get ...so I "JB welded" the standard water pipe to a hzj vacuum pipe)

t-case has new hardware ($30 my cost)

I calc'd $8700+/- US plus offset by selling 13B-T, and I did beb, install, t-case oh, wiring, etc myself. exhaust should run $600-$700, and a/c system should be under $200.

cost conservative conversion would still run $6,000 + labor + sale of 13B-t (add $4,500 to costs and this means using converted original tranny/transmission)

Didn't you end up getting a HDJ78 dual vacuum canister? Got pics?

Dave

dave-

I routed the line from vacuum pump to
rubber line (hz) to
jb weld hz pipe to
rubber line to
inner fender hard line that "t's" to 3 spuds-
#1 large goes to bj74 brake reservoir
#2 large goes to (in this case) pz/hz clutch reservoir
(bj74 tank pointed at turbo, a tight fit)
#3 small goes to a/c switching valve (originally for vacuum t-case models)

the dual tank is cool, but would have required a different hard line on inner fender and all would have been japan only (australia hates to order hdj78/9 parts it seems)

some results:
unofficial speed test was 0-60 in 13 seconds

exhaust is done 2 1/2" with freeflow muffler (from oem hdj70 primary w/ resinator back) was $211

smog score (40-50 mph dyno) was 1% out of a 30% max opacity.

I have not calc'd a mpg yet, but I am pretty heavy footed right now testing it.

oil pressure is good, boost gage is not quite hooked up, water temp is below 1/4 mark (ambient temps are high 70 F, and I am running 100% distilled h2o). Idle rpm is 500 according to tach.

I got egt's up to 1,200 (for 2 seconds or less) on a very hard acceleration, but generally they ride at 500/600. probe is fixed 1" post turbo flange gasket.

a second opnion from Tim Hill thinks it drives night and day faster than the 13B-T powered truck. His comments included better off the line acceleration, better at speed pick up, etc. He also said he could not fathom a 3B powered truck, and the 13B-T was ok at speed, but tough off the line.
