I know this has been beaten to death on this board in the past, but when I look for this box at NAPA, Autozone, Advance Auto, and Rock Auto, they list the box out of a 68 Impala as PN#27 6537 and show that it is casting number 5691676. They also list the 27 6529 box commonly refered to on this site, with the same description but a different casting number, but it doesn't pull up under 68 Impala. I realize the 68 Impala is just one of many cars that had these types of boxes, but the fact that the 276537 box refers to a 5691676 casting number, not to mention the fact that Advance Auto can get it next day from their warehouse for 132.88, makes it the one I am getting! I will let you all know if it is 4.25 turns tomorow when I lay my hands on it. The description in the parts books says 4 bolt saginaw 800 13/16 input shaft 3.5-4.25 turns. We'll see.....

I bought one of those you are talking about with that casting no. It was 3-1/4 turns lock to lock. Good Luck

3 1/4 huh? Did you run that, or what did you end up with? Is the 6529 the one thats 4 turns? I guess I went with the 6537 because the one that was in my FJ40 had that same 5691676 casting number on it, but honestly I don't know how many turns it was because I haven't had the car running yet, and now I tore the gearbox apart so I can't tell. I did talk to a local rebuilder yesterday also, and he said he would rebuild mine for $150, but again, I'm not sure what ratio it is. He could probably put a 4 turn worm gear in it though right? Maybe not for the $150 though, that would probably cost me more.........

Also, my column shaft just has a U-Joint at each end but no rag joint or slip joint. Sounds like by what I read in the tech articles, I need to put a slip joint in huh??

Supposed to get the 6537 today, and the guy at Advance Auto said we could send it back if it wasn't the ratio I wanted.

My 3 1/4 turn box handles fine on the road. It isn't quirky or squirrelly or anything else except responsive and predictable.

X2.

There is a 2.5 turn box that I have seen and operated in a Land Cruiser....that was fun....Owner stated it was from a Camero....

Good luck!

Just got back from picking up my box at Advance Auto. It is the same casting number as my old one and.......drum roll please........IT IS A 4.25 TURN BOX!!! Sounds like that is hit and miss on these things, but I got lucky! Took my lunch break early to pick it up. Even got it mounted back on the frame. I got other steering issues, but that one is resolved. Now I have to find a slip spline for my column shaft, and maybe a different pitman arm and or steering arm where the steering rod ties in. The box actually stops in both directions, just short of the bump stops. Is that normal? A longer pitman arm would fix that, but the one I have doesn't look that short, its like 6 inches long, but the steering arm on the passenger side has both holes very close to each other, not like others I have seen on this site. Not sure where it came from, but I know it does have mini truck disk brakes on it.......
Thanks
tom

Heres a pic of my stops. I'll take one tonight of the high steer arm and of the pitman arm.

This might be a silly question given the vintage of the application but does this magic box use O-ring or flared filltings?

I wonder if the 13/16 input is the differance? The box I pulled had a 13/16 input and I had to order the u-joint to fit it. The speed shop had the 3/4" joints in stock. I think 13/16 is the older ones but not sure what year it changed.

13/16 it is

Texican posted once that the whole flared fitting o-ring thing didn't matter because the mating part could be removed and replaced with either style. I haven't confirmed that but I trust he would know.

Great timing on this thread! My power steering box just started puking fliud out of the output and I was looking for the part number.

Interesting..I had not heard this before. Texican, will you please elaborate?

Thanks thsorens, I just called advance auto and gave them the 6537 number. I ask the guy if I could request the 4.25 turn box, he looked it up and told me not a problem. My box will be here in the morning, and for the same exact price as yours with only a $15 core charge.

Actually, there's another option if you're running big tires/locked front, you might want to consider the Saginaw box from a J20 truck, it's pretty much the same box with 4.25 turn, 13/16 input, flare fittings but with bigger bore for the extra boost.
