while scrounging for floorboards ran across this one; a 71 that sometime in its life has been in Lower Mexico.......no axles, tranny, TC or motor..has decent roof with superficial rust but no cancer, decent hood, fair tail gate good PS rear corner, 3 nice doors and one fair one....... all wheel opening lips are in good shape, DS fender is good, PS fender is fair, all door sills and jambs look good hinges are good except DS which need rebuilding..........fellow wants 400$ for the entire carcass will probably take less just to get it out of his front.yard??; floor boards were completely rotted through .........Steve<eventhough> is needing a roof; need advice on where to cut?, anyone else up for a pigpickin?

$400 is probably a little steep. I could use a hood but need a 2f hood and this is a F hood, tailgate, and glass but just don't have the time right now to come pick up the parts. As far as where I would cut the roof I would just hack it off below nay of my rust. Seeing the amount of surface rust on that roof makes me wonder if there is any rust hiding inside that roof. The headliner would need to be pulled to try and get a better look...distance, or actually time to come pick up, is the problem right now.

Thanks for looking at it Lou. If the current owner would cut a good deal it might be worth picking up if you have a place to store it for awhile. Heck, we could meet in ATL to swap the next time you were around....just thinking out loud....need cooofffeee....

I just took a closer look at the roof pics and I bet there is rust in the roof and in the pillars.

Doh - Marshall, you beat me to the reflectors! Do you need just the reflectors or the chrome trim? All I need is the chrome trim .

Where are you located? I could use a tailgate - '71 the same as '74? I could also use a DS fender, but shipping might suck...

I had a fender shipped from Colorado via Greyhound freight for just over $30. You won't get it in a hurry but if you don't mind waiting and you have a depot near you it might work out.

I did pull out the headliner in several places and ......surprise!! NO RUST:D didn't see any in the pillars but the floor boards were total crap! could stick my fist through them by merely pushing!
reflectors Marshall...........believe one is crap the other fair.
Pablo......the tailgate is restorable has one section of rust that is fixable in the lower left side corner
Steve, the roof was impressive cause it seemed to be all surface rust and the rain gutters aren't eaten through and through, pulled some rips in the headliner a bit more and the inside steel was nice ....this pig spent time in Mexico and it must have been in a dry area for it to look so good + the fenders are very solid along with the weel arches.........the guy is in no hurry and I squirted some oil on the bolts to try to get things loosened up for a pig picking fest sometime in the future............have never carved off a roof befor eso need technical advice before I screw things up.have been know to do that a few times in the past:grinpimp:

Pablo, will see what I can do on the tailgate, on the DS fender; do you need both the lower and upper parts?.......by the way, the rear tailgate window is up; any ideas on how to open the tailgate or lower the window w/o any power without screwing things up??; ???...........sent you a reply on your parts compatibility thread.........looking at scavenging this carcass that will be sent to the crusher just don't have a lot of free time with family and work obligations........rear doors look good; several threads have mentioned differences between front doors....does anyone know if the rear doors interchangable for all years ?

Lou

Lou, I just went through the process of dealing with a locked tailgate with the window up(Cruiser-guy had mentioned the glass is connected by two "clips") scenerio. I unscrewed the regulator and was able to pop the track wheels from the glass base. A little prompting with a flat head screwdriver quickened the process - only damage was to the window base/clip connection...however, I was only after the motor and impatient @ the time:D Rear side doors appear to be the same throughout the years - can see no differences between the 71 and 78s in my possession - but my eyes are dim, I cannot see, I have not got my...................:flipoff2: That 55 shell would make a great playhouse for the kids:beer:best of luck with the undertaking!

Hey offkilter thanks for the input; will try to be patient and could use some ideas of cutting tools; there is no power there where it is located so would have to run about 125 feet of extension cord could carry a small compressor with me, have an electrical side grinder and a sawzall, what blades/cutters do you all suggest???...but if need to could access some airtools

Pablo/Marshall, these pix are for you, you can see the rusted area left lower corner of the tailgate that seems to me to be very repairable

Marshall, the DS reflector is toast:frown:

Lou - you should rent or access a small gas powered generator to power your tools. Did some roof and pillar cutting a few weeks back....grinder with a super thin disc worked wonders(bring plenty) and thee old sawzall with bi-metal/metal small tooth recip saw blades was also helpful. Those two tools should keep you productive and happy(cordless drill, bits and vice-grips for any stripped small screws)- ...otherwise, just the usual elbow grease, handtools and LOTS of mandatory cursing will get you through the task....remember, those rusty old 55 beasts like to bite, so watch your hands:grinpimp: Have fun

question to the group.....where do I cut the roof off?, base of pillars or at the top of pillars?
LC, as far as I can remember the thresholds looked decent but would have to recheck, will have to hornet bomb to look under the dash.............several yellow jacket nests in there:eek:

Lou

Lou - is the roof for me? Depending on price I could probably take it but I have absolutely no idea of when I could come pick it up.

If I was cutting the roof off I would cut the pillars off about mid-height...basically as low as possible. When installing you can always trim extra off but you can't add more. If you're cutting the roof snag the glass too! rear glass and tailgate glass would be sweet if its clean. Any idea on cost?

Lou

I understand the time crush!

I would take the upper and lower if economics work in my favor...

Lou

Yep, looks like the tailgate needs some love. I'm still interested.

I also need a window crank (DS rear window), can you grab one of those for me?

Lets PM on prices...
