HG Blown or Not blown, that's the bloody question

Started digging in there few days ago after my cylinder misfiring incident (Linky). Almost every thing is removed, will be removing the head either today or tomorrow after I pick up the hoist. Well, here are some snap shots, man this stuff is nasty looking.

Not really. No over heating, just white smoke with really strong gas smell and really rough idle.

Yeah I am looking forward to the the oil cooler and the other fun stuff :D. Got the parts from Dan yesterday.

Wouldn't that point to a bad injector or something?

From what I'm looking at the carbon deposits look cleaner as you go towards cyl 1, not what you would expect from the typical HG failure around 5&6...

I am suspecting bad injector(s), and/or injector connectors/wiring. After wiggleing the injectors 4 & 5 in the last go around the truck ran pretty smooth for a week with a little fluctuation in the idle. Then I am not sure what happened, the crazy white smoke wouldn't stop any more. The wiggle trick did not work any more. I saw a very little bubble in the over flow coolant but absolutely no over heating. So I thought hell with it, I am digging in there. I saw another fellow mudder had almost exact same situation, here's the link: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=146982&highlight=misfire. I will post pictures after I take the head off. I will get the injectors clean and tested now that they are out.

Thanks

Keep us posted.

I am one of those without any head gasket problems (yet). I am at 150,000 miles on the '97 so maybe I'm just lucky, or C-Dan just hasn't gotten around to me yet.

BTW: Should I get new bolts for the head? They don't look that bad except #6 got some gunk on it. Those that have done this, did you get new bolts?

Thanks:cheers:

A little off topic, did you have the off idle ping that so many complain about?

Off idle ping, hmmm... you know? I never figured out what that really means :D but my idle was so low that I could hear squicky kinda noise coming out of the engine block. The idle would never go to 500, it was more like 300 or 250 but it never died though.

Someone's been running crap fuel and/or old spark plugs in that thing....

Did the Gasket fail?

BTW: that's one dirty engine, now would be a good time to go through as much of the wiring harness as possible to correct any "future" problems... PM

I replaced the plugs about 6K miles ago. BTW: many thanks to you for doing that video. I have been watching that video since I got it from you last year. By now I probably have watched it more than 100 times. I guess I can agree with the crappy fuel comment but then it is really hard to figure out what is crap and what is not. I have been using Chevron, Exxon and Shell 87 for past few years. Although a while back I did use bg44k and redline stuff, that might have some thing to do with this. Anyway, got the new fuel filter on. I am also replacing the oil pan seals. So in overall, things should lighten up a bit after I'm done. I am looking forward to it.

As for the HG, I need to take a closer look at it to really determine whether it was blown or not. I am hoping after I clean up all that mess, I should be able to do that. But at this point I don't really care if it is blown or not cause I've got a new one, So in theory, it's blown :D

I thought I'd go out and see if I can pull out the old gasket in one piece. It came out pretty easily. It looks to me that it was in the verge of being blown. However it looks better than some of the others I have seen at 156K+/- miles. What do you think?

You had #1 and #6 has failed. you do have some nasty carbon build up. How does the cylinder walls look? you may even have some carbon build up not allowning the valves to full close, Hopefully you do not have any burned valves. Injectors were not working that well on #1 and #4 and the exhaust valves are not closing well on #5 and #6. Good luck with the service work. Later Robbie

Thank you Robbie :)

The cylinder walls have that black carbon/gunk stuff on almost all of them. #5 seems to have the least. Yes I am also hoping the vavles are not burnt out otherwise parts list for Dan will be growing :).
