Not really. Check the diesel section, there is info in a sticky thread at the top of that forum about importing.

P.S. I think you posted in the wrong section.

yes, there is a way...
but not legal...
unless it has a 17 digit vin code. then it can be done...

It isnt legally possible. There are all kinds of loopholes in the system, and I suppose if you found a way through one of those technically you wouldnt be breaking the law, but it isnt legally possible here in Warshington state.

My experience with importing diesels from canada at any rate, was that it will do you a world of good to call customs (repeatedly) at the port that you're going to be using and talk to as many people as you can and see what they have to say about it.....it helped me find a loophole that allowed me to bring in two nonexempt diesel cruisers anyway.

I dont know how they do it , but it is being done.!?

If your pockets are deep, it can be done but to the tune of thousands over the purchase price to make the neccessary modifications to meet U.S. specs and regulations UNLESS the vehicle is 25+ years old.

That one on ebay. Was brought in by a dual citizen Canadian/US
that is the loop hole.

and there....this thread just got added to the FAQ. Thanks for posting all the links.

If it was sold in Canada for the Canadian market it is no problem to import to the US, basically the BJ-70 and diesel 60 series. You have to figure out the paper work or go through a Registered Importer that is familiar with importing diesels as some RI are afraid to tackle diesels. No go on any other market vehicles unless you have deep pockets or find some other way, whether leagal or not.

I recently imported a 1981 BJ42 from Australia, thought I did my homework and I was waiting for my California title/plates from Sacramento when yesterday I received a letter from the California DMV technical compliance division asking for the infamous Toyota letter. After my discussions with the local DMV here in Santa Rosa I understood that I could use the 25-year DOT and 21-year EPA exemptions, but it seems not.

Has anyone brought a diesel Cruiser into California recently and dealt with this? I have a feeling dealing with the California ARB is going to be a very expensive process, so any ideas/tips on this front would be appreciated. Maybe I'll just call the number provided on the letter and plead my case when the DMV opens on Monday...

Have you considered moving from CA to the United States?
