HELP!!!!!

Well for those of you that recall, My GF and I were headed to Ontario to pick up a new HJ60 LandCruiser, and visit both our families. Well, after spending 600 in Ottawa on new batteries, belts and some electrical etc.. I was headed west. Only as far as Marmora Ontario unfortunately. That was where disaster struck and the head blew up. Apparently the lines to the rear heater had rusted out and coolant had leaked out, the vehicle overheated and the head cracked. So now my truck which is supposed to get me and all my stuff to Victoria, BC, is sitting in a garage in Marmora, Ontario with a head kit on the way and in need of a head. I am into this thing now for well over a grand since I picked it up, between a night in a motel, an extra flight to Toronto, towing etc... I do not have time to be here and no idea where or when I'll be able to find/get a head here either. To make matters worse, I am in Stratford, Ontario with my GF's family. Approximately 3 hours west of the truck. I am at my wits end and running out of money rapidly. I would value any and all suggestions at this point. The temp gauge obviously wasn't working, but it had been prior to me taking it to the dealership in Ottawa. Do I have any recourse there? I am willing to sell, trade, and whatever else any of you might be able to come up with. Thanks in advance

first, did you actually buy the truck from a dealer?
are your SURE the head is cracked? is it off the vehicle? 2H heads are pretty durable. are you sure it isn't just the head gasket?

i am not sure but Mike Gozzard in Goderich "might" have a head for you. only thing is he doesn't ship so you would have to pick it up.

you have CAA?
 
Well, the vehicle was purchased from a family friend in Ottawa. Then taken to the dealership to get the electrical dealt with. Was running fine until all of a sudden all hell was breaking loose. Managed to get the vehicle to a small garage in Marmora, and had the head removed only to find it is grenaded. This of course once a complete head kit was on the way. Needless to say, the dealership is saying they had nothing to do with any of the wiring that was related to the temp gauge, and only touched the headlight and batteries and belts. As I have no way to prove the temp gauge was working before I brought it in, I assume I am up **** creek without my proverbial paddle.

Contact info for Mike Gozzard? Might be great as I am not far from Goderich.
 
Your recourse will be limited to none with the dealership. If they only worked on the headlights and some non related items then you are out of luck. Driving with the temp guage broken is what caused the head crackage. You will probably just have to suck this one up.

As the title indicates, I am now back in BC. Unfortunately my new to me HJ60 is in storage in Peterborough. It has a cracked head. I have been given many options as to what to do about this. I have decided to wait for a bit and see what comes along. Apparently a new replacement Head is 1600 from Japan. It might be able to be repaired for 600 to 800, not really leaning that way, but it may be an option apparently. Finding a used head and going back to Ontario to fix it and then driving it back across Canada is still an option. And of course selling to someone and being done with the whole thing has been a thought throughout this entire debacle. Any suggestions or offers will be considered over the next month before I have to renew my storage fees.
 
i get this asked many times espec when one of the 2LTE looses a head...
determine the value of the truck to you, if it is worth the 1500 (head) + 200 (switch the valves etc over) + $600 +/- (shop time to reinstall the head ) + $400 (plane ticket) + ??? getting from the plane to the truck + ??? (fuel and room and food return trip) then go for it...

or

take all the above subtract it from the money you paid for the unit and can you sell it for that much? (that is your break even price). are you willing to loose a bit more than that just to get rid of a headache?

Totally good points, and basically the equations I have been running through my head. There are a few variables that are keeping the grey area a little too big for me to make a final decision yet. One being the fact that I am not there to actually deal with the truck, and have never dealt with selling a vehicle by proxy or over any serious distance. There are a few parts I'd like to salvage if I'm selling it off. If the vehicle was here, I could do the shop work myself. I have no idea how much or how hard it would be to get the vehicle shipped out here, since it isn't running and isn't going to be insured. The basic equations are the same though as the ones you pointed out, and as such, I just need to narrow down some of the variables and sooner or later I'll have my answer. Anyone have advice on shipping a non-running HJ60 from Peterborough, Ontario to Victoria, BC? Of course I have to live on the island. Also anyone know much about selling South of the Border? I have had a few ideas put to me to try selling to an American as the diesels are harder to come by down there. Is this any harder for me? Or just for the Buyer?
 
Sorry dude .. bad to ear that.

In a side note, when I start my HJ-60 overhaull process my head was little cracked ( and all 6 precups ) the machine shops said it can be repaired .. So I decide sell it ( pretty cheap 200 USD ) and buy a new one .. ( old one but with no cracks )
 
my buddy shipped his car from T. to calgary for 600, but they could drive it onto the train
 
You should be able to get it shipped out there by an auto hauling company - even if you cant get it to your door you could get it to a garage near by, or perhaps somewhat closer - say - alberta - have a reputable shop (or person) recieve it there and fix your problems, then fly to alberta and drive it the rest of the way home... ? just another option?
 
as of friday last week Hanssens fees have gone up another $50. they refuse to ship ANYTHING that does not run (flat tire, dead batteries, cooling issues, shifting problems).
i got quoted anywhere from $1400 to $2200 to ship a mits Jeep out from Ontario to Calgary... hence my drive down there last fall...

shipping has become STUPID.

Ok my take.

If it is a clean beautiful truck, fix it. What ever route you want.

If it's a regular Hj60 nothing too special I would consider selling it and subtracting the head from the price and little more to make it desirable.

But before you do that look at the prices of Hj60's in your area and see if with the shipping it would be worth it.

I personally would fix it it up at a shop down there, fly out and drive it back. The shipping for a non running truck isn't going to be cheap. I doubt it would less than 1500. Which is the labour I bet for installing the head. Or cheaper.

If the KM's are low on the rig and you fix the problems it will be a nice truck.
 
I have a BJ74 at hansens now, came in a container and had the fuel drained - well Hansen's can't prime a fuel system so my truck is stuck in BC now - lotsa fun.

Maybe the two of you could strike some sort of deal: priming and bleeding the fuel system in exchange for overseeing the head being redone? It could save the both of you some cash. I know the HJ60 isn't exactly in your neck of the woods but it is closer than BC. Just an idea ....
 
even if they could prine the engine they won't as of last week non-runners sit till the importer can get them running...
i asked them why and the answer was we are too busy...
when i asked them about the price increase they told me "we have too many cars to ship so we are increasing our pricing"
i told them i have shipped over a 100 cars with them and the answer is"thanks for the business but the price increase affects everyone"
now i am looking at other means of shipping my units.. the last 3 came in covered with crap.. seems like they just do not care...
 
I will be looking into other means as well, I need to get that truck here. Anyone know of a cruiser guy near Hansens who could go over and bleed the system? I bet they ran the batteries dead as well.
