I shut down the motor and it ran backwards. During that time it sounded like something blew off under the hood. It sounded like compressed air, kinda like pulling a hose off of a compressor. I popped the hood and everything looked normal, no hoses blew off, so I tried to start it again. It runs like S**IT and only with the pedal down. Could this have screwed up the inside of the carb somehow? I am going back out to try some other stuff but I thought Id get this out now. Oh, the fuel level is all the way down on the window. I shake the truck and just see a bit sloshing around.

start by checking the fuel pump, filter and all of that stuff.about your carb yes ive seen it stick the float but only once, dissconnect your fuel pump line and see what ya got:beer:

Yep, pumping fuel and the clear fuel filter is clean. The fuel level is back up so it must be just a coicidence (sp?).

Would that be considered reverse dieseling?

Guess so fuzzy. Now I need that horn the guy in your avatar is using:eek: I pulled the top of the carb off, everything looks good. The needle moves and there is no crud in the bowl. I put it back togeather and no change. Still looking. What causes the motor to run backwards on shutdown?

You need ignition timing, compression and fuel.

You have fuel

Check for spark
Check for OK compression
Make sure your timing is good to go.

Cant think of why it would not run after doing that. I have seen me do it...

Runs like sheeat w/ the pedal down, or only pumping the pedal, is symptomatic of a big vacum leak.

Something blew off when the engine was pumping up the intake manifold. Look closely at the Pcv hose, valve, EGR, Power brake hose, brake booster, vacuum t-case shift....
Anything that is expected to live w/ vacuum, but might be inconvenienced by the presence of pressure.

Probably no carb damage, as the manifold pressure is all below the throttles in the base of the carb.

I have good spark and the plugs look great. I can't check timing or compression because those tools are at work. Speaking of work, looks like I have to figure out how to get there tomorrow. I don't have a garage and its supposed to rain for the next five days:crybaby:

Yes, you blew off a vacuum line somewhere...

OR, when it was running backwards, (likely from poor fuel and incorrect or too much retarded on your timing...) you could have jumped time...

unless it's a gear drive then that's not very likely....

IS THIS A SBC OR F OR 2F

WHAT MOTOR DO YA GOT ?

Are you sure it didn't bind the choke plate when it bcked up, otherwise I'm with Jim on the vacuum leak.

THATS IT! I think you nailed it. But its not the choke plate its the throttle plate.... I have seen this happen......

Bind the throttle plate all you want... When he pushed the gas pedal the bind is no longer there because it must have opened or the throttle would not have moved.... silly ;0

Silly, thats why it takes time to find the problem. It has not happened to me but i recall it did happen to one of the guys in our club...... We will see who is silly when he find this as his problem.....

Oh yeah! It is ON! ;p Ha ha ha....

I was only remarking on the fact that he said it would barely even run at WOT, which means that the throttle plates had to have opened...

Good point.... Betchya a cyber beer that its throttle related.. :-)

I'll have to ponder that cyper beer... The last one I drank gave me the hiccup burps... and made me forget how to spell...

If it's a weber and it backfired it can wedge the choke plate. I've done it a few dozen times. On the webber you just take the air cleaner of and pop the choke plate with a screw driver, car keys, pen, cigarette lighter, etc....

Though mine never ran after the plate wedged I'd have to pop the choke plate before it would start.

Webers don't have fuel windows so I guess it is an aisin.
