890man,

Good luck! My 40 did the same thing to me a few months ago, and I haven't been able to get it running since. You can search the forums and you'll see that everyone gives all the same answers, and I'm here to tell you, none of 'em work. But, if you happen to stumble across one that does, LET ME KNOW! My cruiser has been down since septemberish and I'm really wanting to get it back on the road. I've checked timing, vacuum, taken apart and thoroughly cleaned the carb, etc. etc. etc. and nothing works. Good luck man, hope you can figure out what the heck is wrong!

check your wiring at the alternater.i know it sounds dum but look at it real good, ive had the same crap happen more than once

Well I had a chance to look at it again today and couldn't believe what I found. Yes, it was a large vac leak. The stud holding the carb down had blown out:eek:. It was the one on the rear toward the motor, the one that is hard to see. This hole in the intake casting goes all the way into the intake. There were less than two threads of aluminum on the stud and the entire hole was stripped. I have never had these out or messed with the studs. It must have been stripped before I owned it and just threaded down further to catch a few more. Thats the only thing I can think of. The reverse rotation produced enough pressure to blow it. Well, after a heli-coil, I'm back on the road.

I decided to pull the others and found a second that had been partially stripped so I fifed that one too. Yea, hadn't expected that one. I was all over the carb looking for problems and it still took me way too long to find that. Oh well.
