I went to Calgary this weekend and thought I would have two more keys cut for my HDJ81. I had called ahead and I was told it was no problem to get a key cut. Stopped by Stampede Toyota (larger dealer). Parts had closed about 1 hour ago, so I asked a salesmen. He said there is another dealer about 10 minutes up the road.
So I drive on up (Country Hills Toyota), they are a large dealer too. They are a higher-end Toyota Lexus dealer. They had a Porsche Carrera (with in a year old) in the showroom, newer Corvette, new Lexus sport coupes, and more. The showroom had probably 50 cars or more. I figured "great, I'm in the right place". I wander on over to the parts counter and ask to have a key cut for my 80 series cruiser. He asked if I had my key code. I said no because it was a Japanese import. I showed him the key. I think the HDJ81 uses a whole different key design over the domestic 80. It looks like a newer lexus or VW key. It's square with the grooves cut into the inside. (will post pic tonight),
He said they can't cut them and have to order them from Toyota. He can't search my VIN because the truck came from Japan. So he said he said they can't cut it, or order it.
He recommended a larger locksmith. I don't live in Calgary or go there often.
Any ideas?
Can I get it cut here? Or do I need to call a Japanese Toyota dealer and give them my Japanese VIN number and have it shipped?
Thanks,
Nick
Also, its interesting to note that they had no 100 series cruisers. I asked about them. I wanted to take one for a drive. I was told no dealers in Calgary had them. What they heck? They have a $150,000 Porshce but no 100 series? They have 50 or more Sequoia's and not a single 100? How does toyota expect to sell the 100 if the dealer will not bring it in? People drop almost the same money on a VW Tourage. It just seems dumb. Anyone out there have a 100 I can drive? Just want to take it for a spin.
