I went to Calgary this weekend and thought I would have two more keys cut for my HDJ81. I had called ahead and I was told it was no problem to get a key cut. Stopped by Stampede Toyota (larger dealer). Parts had closed about 1 hour ago, so I asked a salesmen. He said there is another dealer about 10 minutes up the road.

So I drive on up (Country Hills Toyota), they are a large dealer too. They are a higher-end Toyota Lexus dealer. They had a Porsche Carrera (with in a year old) in the showroom, newer Corvette, new Lexus sport coupes, and more. The showroom had probably 50 cars or more. I figured "great, I'm in the right place". I wander on over to the parts counter and ask to have a key cut for my 80 series cruiser. He asked if I had my key code. I said no because it was a Japanese import. I showed him the key. I think the HDJ81 uses a whole different key design over the domestic 80. It looks like a newer lexus or VW key. It's square with the grooves cut into the inside. (will post pic tonight),
He said they can't cut them and have to order them from Toyota. He can't search my VIN because the truck came from Japan. So he said he said they can't cut it, or order it.

He recommended a larger locksmith. I don't live in Calgary or go there often.
Any ideas?

Can I get it cut here? Or do I need to call a Japanese Toyota dealer and give them my Japanese VIN number and have it shipped?

Thanks,
Nick

Also, its interesting to note that they had no 100 series cruisers. I asked about them. I wanted to take one for a drive. I was told no dealers in Calgary had them. What they heck? They have a $150,000 Porshce but no 100 series? They have 50 or more Sequoia's and not a single 100? How does toyota expect to sell the 100 if the dealer will not bring it in? People drop almost the same money on a VW Tourage. It just seems dumb. Anyone out there have a 100 I can drive? Just want to take it for a spin.

Well . I have somehow the same issue .. with my key. I can make local ( Ilco ) a copy, but not the same thing, not the same material, and have some troubles to use this one starting my 80 series ..

I thought need to buy otherone, Toyota key, to keep it as replacement.

Tapage,
Your key probably has a built in immobilizer.
You might have to get it from a dealer.

This is what my key looks like. Mine just does not have a built in remote. But it shows you the "reverse" type key am talking about.

Nick,
100 series are not sold in Canada at all, neither was 80 series at all.

The only thing close sold in Canada is the lexus version which is a 470. You have to go to a Lexus dealer. Then you can see them.

Toyota in Canada s_cks. Last cruiser in Canada was the 60 series.

I called my importer at lunch today.
He said there is a place in Vancouver that will do them.

Apparently every key is about $50 CND.
Anyone know of a cheaper way?

Wayne, where do you get yours done?
Any cheaper?

Cheers,
Nick

I had mine cut by a local locksmith for $35 CAD plus taxes.

The blank is made by "ilco", pattern "LXP90-P".

Curiously, the key that came with my Cruiser was not original; it too had the same "ilco" logo and "LXP90-P" number on one side, and "CANADA" on the other - I wish that I had noticed earlier; I could have attempted a reduction on the import duty.

Now you have another reason to come to the Island!

Hey, now that I look at my spare key it has "ilco LXP90-P" on it. :)
I have two keys. One OEM key and my other one.
I want to have 3 or 4.

HDJ81 Key

I agree. Stealer price for key blank here in NZ is around $40. And then there is the cost of cutting. I got a mobile locksmith guy to cut one the other day in Hamilton, New Zealand. He came to me and using his computerised key cuting machine he recognised the Key Code and then cut me a new one. So I now have the Toyota Code for my key and a new Key all for the sum of $40 and he came to me. Look around as there must be someone out there that can provide the same level of service.
Good luck.
If it is a std jdm import HDJ81 then the key is just a hunk of metal with no electronics etc to cause problems.
This is the second time that I have had to do this as I lost the first key I had cut.

Cheers

I walked into the local locksmith shop in Vernon and he cut me a key for $30 a piece in 15 minutes. I guess some have stock and other don't :meh:

Better alternative than loosing your original and only one

Okay so, I went to the guy in Calgary and he cut a great key, actually goes into my lock better than the key the PO gave me.
I bought 3 ilco LXP90 blanks off ebay total cost including shipping was $11.00 plus Calgary Lock & Safe cut them for $20/key (normally $25/key)... so $80 for 3 new keys and piece of mind

They also sell blanks for $20/key...he said they normally stock these keys.

Anyone have a stateside source?
I bought one from an eBay seller last year for 25$ cut to my code and shipped. Unfortunately he has since raised his price to 130$.

There’s some more info also in this posting that I learned about rekeying 81 locksets:
