1989 LJ73 - Getting it Back to Safe and Reliable Condition

Finished work on the LJ73. Repaired the fiberglass top and painted it platinum gray metallic on outside and just solid gray with new headliner inside. Installed a Murphy Switch and starts instantly now and idles smooth no smoke. Slight weepy leak rear of engine either valve cover gasket or oil...

    Starting My "New" 2L-T

However, waiting a half minute every time I need to start cold is a non-starter (pun intended) (even for me retired and not in a hurry). So, I read through the Murphy Switch thread and decided to go that route. Purchased four 11v Glow Plugs and a push-button switch. Wired one side of button to...

    Which plugs should I be running - B, 2B, 3B, H and 2H diesels

I'd like to shut down my SuperGlow and install a Murphy Switch. Current glow plugs are 0 250 202 054 7.5v and I'd like to replace them with an equivalent 12v if I can find the correct length and diameter. Bosch catalog not much help. Ideas? Maybe these? 12V Glow Plug 19850-54120 for Toyota...

    Starting My "New" 2L-T

Update: I think I figured out the smoky rough idle first 15 seconds...When it's been sitting for a few days or when cold, if I try to crank right after main relay kicks out I get the smoke and rough idle. If I turn key off the back on and wait for 20 seconds so the secondary relay runs it's full...

    Which plugs should I be running - B, 2B, 3B, H and 2H diesels

I've been struggling with hard starting and smoking (for 10-15 seconds) with my 89 LJ73 with 2L-T engine since I got it this fall. It's running Bosch 0 250 202 054 7v plugs which I've tested and they glow fine with 12v after 2 seconds. Tested the superglow at the plug end for correct resistance...

1989 LJ73 - Getting it Back to Safe and Reliable Condition

Cancelled my Wit's End order so no offset oil seal driver. Might figure out how to get a large washer same diameter as seal to stick to the driver that's 2mm thick and make my own offset. I keep getting a bit of oil drip at the lowest point of engine after I drive it - tranny interface so...

1989 LJ73 - Getting it Back to Safe and Reliable Condition

Suspension upgrade done. OME coil springs, shocks, and steering dampener all installed. Springs required a bit of compression and a few choice words of encouragement to get in. Front were actually easier than rears. Next is to finish getting the Rough Country 9500 winch installed using a...

    Starting My "New" 2L-T

If I do a compression check using the glow plug ports, do I use a 12x1.25 adapter?

    Starting My "New" 2L-T

My starting ambient temps are around 40-50F, and it's a LOT of smoke for 15 seconds then disappears almost instantly and idles smooth. Restarting a warm engine is instant and smokeless.

    Starting My "New" 2L-T

I checked both fuel lines back to the tank. All hoses are soft and look like new. All steel lines look freshly painted - like I said, this Cruiser is in exceptional shape as far as body rust and corrosion (none). Looks like one line from tank direct to filter/primer and second line from injector...

    Starting My "New" 2L-T

What is amazing about this Cruiser is that there isn't a spot of rust anywhere. All steel lines and rubber hoses look new - rubber is soft and not cracked. I don't think this was ever driven in mud or water and it must have lived somewhere away from the coast and salty air. So I have to assume...

1989 LJ73 - Getting it Back to Safe and Reliable Condition

Just got the FRP Top back on. Need to go buy all of the bolts required and make new L bracket for rear corners. Lots of fiberglass repair work needed - top right corner has major cracks and and a complete break halfway down to the bottom of the corner. Amazingly, side and rear door windows are...

    Starting My "New" 2L-T

New filter/primer assembly installed. When I primed after installation it never got firm and I could hear air bubbles in the fuel tank. Now, if it sits for a few days it takes 5 seconds to crank then runs really rough with lots of smoke for 15 seconds then smoke clears and it idles smooth as...

    Replacing Front Coil Springs

Plan is to remove lower shock nuts and sway bar in front, jack up with floor jack under diff, place jack stands in recommended location (from repair manual), then lower gently watching the brake line tension then hopefully articulate enough to remove springs without compressors. Will do same for...

    Replacing Front Coil Springs

Tried three local shops - nobody wanted to change out the springs and estimated $300-$400 to do it if they wanted to. And booked until around Feb So I figured I could save a couple hundred and bought a set of Sunex Medium Jack Stands 18"-29" These are monster stands that I feel safe putting...
