Yes the EVAP is not checked but periodically (a week sounds about right, I can't recall the exact frequency or conditions it is run. My split was on the top of a hose, you couldn't see it from underneath. I found it with my fingers after pulling my hair out looking for the leak. Even a shop...

The boot is just a seal for the body, not part of the fuel/emissions system. Look for splits in the hoses that are above the spare tire. That's where mine was.

Worth taking to a mechanic then. I always listen for strange noises and general changes, it's saved me from some costly repairs in the past. Trust the intuition and get it checked out.

Stick a piece of wood in the fan and hold it while someone starts the truck. The fluid coupling will allow the fan to remain stationary as the belt turns. At least that's the theory. When my fan bracket when bad, it sounded like the engine was about to explode.

Check injector o rings at the manifold. Mine were very hard and no longer sealing properly. I see you did the smoke test, but it's worth a look. Was the smoke test done at cold or hot engine temp?

I'm in for any finish. She's a workin' girl, and is pretty from far, but far from pretty.

I made my own. A shelf I can strap 2 cans to (need to expand to 3, she's thirsty). Works great as a table too. I can pull the cans off and put my stove up there.

It's a big price, but I feel that is absolutely worth it to keep these vehicles on the road. I'm still in!
