No, I had more enough room by just loosening the u-bolts but not taking them completely off. I don’t remember how close it was to the tire carrier but it didn’t interfere. That tire carrier is a pain.

They aren’t that fragile… I installed some in an ARB. I usually screw up 50% of my projects and I didn’t even screw those up. Go OEM or you’ll regret it. I doubt they are fun to replace so I’d get it right the first time.

For the mirror plastic I’d put money on buffing compound. I’ve been buffing my wife’s passenger side and that area collects a lot of compound. The buffer gets a little wonky in that area under the mirror. It’s the same color as 3m Machine Polish as well. It dries hard and can initially be hard...
