I spent a month living in/driving this cruiser and took it all the way from Victoria BC to Hyder Alaska. Very solid 80, works good, clean underneath. If I wasn’t so deep time and money wise into my current 80 I’d be all over it.

The LM2 is also hooked to a smart auto with a bunch of gears as well, which keep it where it wants to be I'm sure. With a manual that 800-1500rpm range really matters. That's where I'm curious how these higher-strung 3.0 I6 diesels perform (LM2, M57, OM606) with a manual. Enough aftermarket...

Interesting, I (Canadian) come from a 3FE 80 series that has a manual swap, in a kitted out (heavy) 80. I recently did a Cape York trip in a loaded and mildly tuned diesel 4JJ1 Colorado with a 5 speed. On paper, it blew the 3FE out of the water, and on the highway it did. Held hills and speed...

Very cool swap, I was wondering when/if ever someone was going to do this. Would be interested in fuel figures for conservative driving as well as however it is you drive normally (for scientific purposes ;)) I'm also curious, how busy and complex is that engine after all the deleting you did...

A very similar chirping noise on mine ended up being the pivot on the release fork being dry. Pry the boot out, and get a little bit of oil up in there, see if it goes away. Did for me. Was also able to test this by lying underneath and putting my hand on the fork. Let us know how you make out...

A de-smog, a tune-up, and advancing the timing a bit helps. After that it's gears, exhaust, cams and head work if you're feeling like taking things apart. My 3FE has a header, 2.5" exhaust, timing bumped and de-smogged, and the rough equivalent of ~5.07 gears (manual tranny). Loaded up with...

I think the main difference will be that while neither are impressive for power, the 3FE will occasionally struggle with normal, day-to-day driving situations (merging uphill, holding highway speed uphill, passing on a two lane road), where the 1FZ will do those things without much trouble...

Agreed. I will say, the nice thing (where I live at least) is that used 3FE's and parts are dirt cheap when they come up because no one really wants them. Rotten FJ62's with running 3FE's that are just about given away, etc.. I've managed to acquire 7 3FE engines (5 I still have) in the past 5...
