I agree with @Nemesis1207. That sounds like a sticking glow plug relay. It only needs to happen once and zap. Install a new relay and see -- they aren't expensive. Best of luck.

I can't seem to locate a part number much less a fuel filter for my 1978 diesel BJ40, BJ40-LV-KC, 3 liter. Any help appreciated. TIA

Nice rig -- well done!!!

My ambulance door lock striker plate has a shim between the plate and the driver's side door frame. I don't think that is original equipment, but it does help with snugging things up as the weatherstripping ages.
