Old broken assembly. New assembly. No binding and looks to be able to survive many more years.

From the exterior door handle looking in. Here's your problem. Press on this lever. I had to use a screwdriver and a hammer. Hit it hard. Plastic and spring will dislodge and a new hole appears. But the door unlocks and assembly can be removed.

I'm having the same issue. Unable to unlock my driver side door. All springs are still intact. Next step is to attempt to remove the front door panel.

Quick update, it's dropped about a 1/4" every corner. Sitting and rides great.

They work the same as the 3rd gen 4runners. Friend of mine just installed a Prinsu on their 1998 surf.
