Time for a fun wiring project to give myself a break from the not-so-fun wiring!

Putting a new stereo into the piggy. I was originally thinking about doing the traditional thing and putting the speakers in the doors. After really thinking it over, though, I figure there are two problems with that:

1.) The doors are not waterproof and it could/would be a challenge to ensure the speakers weren't exposed to water.

2.) The doors are going to rattle like crazy unless I go bananas with the Dynamat, which then gets back to the water issue from #1.

So...all y'all who have the tunes in your pigs, I would love to hear your input on what has and hasn't worked for you (or what you would do different the next time). I have the gear now which consists of a headunit going in my Tuffy arm rest, 6" rounds for somewhere up front, and 6"x9"s for somewhere in the rear (was thinking cargo-area panels). I am not looking for a competition audio rig, but it would be nice to get decent sound that doesn't sound like it is playing inside of a coffee can.

Fwiw, I did search and read up on all the audio installs i could find both 40 and 55 related. The 40's are such a different animal, though, that I figured it best to focus this discussion specifically to my pig-brethren.

Thanks all!

6x9s would go better in the rear cargo panels...I got 'em in my rear doors and windows don't go down all the way. The 6" rounds work fine in the front doors. I hung my sub woofer from the roof in the rear...
Head unit in the Tuffy and 2 amps under the passenger seat.

Thanks pighead. I definitely am going to put the 6x9s in the cargo area.

You aren't at all worried about water in the front doors though?

Well, there's those plastic surrounds that go over the cones, and you buy water-resistant speakers, and speakers don't last forever anyway...

I have some 6X9 in my rear cargo area and want to put some up front. I don't want to cut into my door panels and put them in the doors. Someone posted this idea on an old thread that i'm sure is closed now.

They used a couple of these and placed them in the kick panel area just in front of the doors. Shop Oatey 15" x 11" Thermoplastic Roof Flashing at Lowes.com You can use a 5-6" round speaker and just cut to fit. I bought a couple of the flashing pieces and they look like they should work great. The stereo I have now has a non-working CD player and no ipod inputs. I am planning on getting a new stereo and new speakers and install it all at the same time, someday

Sno bored that is genius!!! Presupposing I don't kick the hell out of it with my size 16s, I think we have a winner for front speaker mounts! Thanks man!

I wasn't the one who came up with it. It looks like a good idea and I am going to do it.....someday

I was wondering about sticking some 6x9's to the inside of the "D"pillars on either side of the tailgate glass, pointing forward.

You could mount them by their magnets.

Does anyone know if there are enclosures for a 6x9 so you don't just have the speaker internals exposed all the time?

Some good ideas in those threads for sure. Thanks Pablo!

Any thoughts, gang, on the Dynamat usage? It's kind of a new-medium for me and I would definitely rather not waste my time on something that is going to cause more problems down the road...or flat out not make an improvement immediately.

Thanks again all!

I've never used the stick in stuff, but I don't like the idea of it holding water, if it gets wet. I used the spray on products, for noise and temp. control. The spray in stuff will help seal up the seams, etc. Dynamat won't. I used Lizard Skin.

Back to this idea - anyone done it?

I made some brakets and hung some indoor outdoor speakers with extra long wire facing foward on the back pillar. They are removable so now I can move them where ever when campinig. They work great and fit perfectly! It is the standard size speakers.

Pics?

I wouldn't cut on my pillars, just for speakers, but here's what's in my 69 parts pig.
