What an awesome weekend out with my family, splitshot and his kids. We ran the Rug Road to Turkey Creek and out thru Wilcox. I had some mishaps along the way, but nothing that stopped us from having fun.

Thursday, left my house and ran the back dirt roads to Mammoth. At the San Pedro River crossing at Mammoth there was 4 inches of water. No big deal, I hit and dropped in to my axles in sand. The truck was not moving anywhere. I got out and started to shovel, but it kept washing back in. A pair of county workers in a pickup came up, turned around like they were going to back up and help us. They took off, set up a road closed sign and lit out of there. Assholes. Finally, an old CJ5 came up, looking to cross the river. Instead, they let me hook my winch to their front bumper and haul my ass out of the river. First time I ever used my winch. :o

Thursday-Saturday-The trip was awesome. We camped in Virgus the first night. It got down to 24* overnight and the place was beautiful. Next two night in Turkey Creek. It started raining around 3am Saturday night and the creek came up pretty good. We packed up and headed out in a light rain on Sunday.

Sunday, the trip out. Just at the end of Turkey Creek, I snapped my POS solid bar, front panhard rod. We limped it very slowly into Klondyke. There John and I examined the carnage and found that it had been cracked a 1/3 of the way thru for some time. We removed it and used a bunch of cargo straps to make a ghetto panhard. This allowed us to limp all the way into Wilcox at an average speed of 15-20 mph. It took 5-1/2 hours to get from Turkey Creek to Wilcox-75 miles.
Once in Wilcox I waited for my buddy to get there with his portable welder and we fixed it up and hit the I-10 home.

What a trip.

Linky to all of my pics.

Wow, never heard of someone breaking a panhard rod. Congrats! :D

Glad to hear everyone is OK could of been bad at 60mph.

X2 on the first time with a broken Pan hard but if anyone can do you have the skills

Are those bushings urethane in the pan hard?

Yup, urethane. They're aftermarket solid rods. I'll be making a new one out of 1-1/4 .250

I thought the same thing about the speed. It was lucky it happened at about 1 mph.

Any evidence of cracks up at the upper mount?

It really seems that the front panhard really takes a beating when wheeled. I've seen and experienced both of the bolts working out and the upper mount cracking off the frame, but now you've shown the panhard itself can snap too - amazing

remember Brian Jowett's ball joint retro-fit for the lower mount?

No evidence that I've seen. I plan on getting under it saturday for a serious inspection of everything.

Did Brian use a Johnny-Joint type of thing? I can see that being helpful.

No Johnny-Joint.... like clown said a ball joint. I remeber questioning him if he was worried about the ball coming out of the socket.

What after market company supplied the pan hard and did it come with urethane bushings?

MAF and yes, it came with urethane. I'm pretty sure it's the same one Slee sells as well.

Can't wait to see the pics you took. Great weekend. Michelle says you and the kids are really good people to camp with.

Great pics John! I won't be wheeling again until I build a better, stronger, faster panhard. (bionic man reference) :meh:

Looks like you guys had a blast. Alvin - you should leave all the straps on just for the "bling" factor.

Looks like a great trip.

Chuck

I think an on board welder may be a cool item to add to the wish list also..

Aftermarket panhard? What the hell for? The stock ones are solid... I'm sure there's a reason, or there wouldn't be aftermarket available. :meh:
