hey guys i have looked and i cant really seem to find much .... but i was wondering if its worth it to upgrade my lights currently using the piaa xtreme white plus 9006 bulbs they are awesome but want brighter...is it worth installing a hid kit using the stock light housing?

yes,

many will tell you your an a hole for not having the projector in the stock housing blah blah blah, and your discourteous to other drivers blah blah, list goes on.

however, the lights are awesome and you can see at night.

Do it and be happy + see at night

Not a good idea.

It will blind oncoming traffic since the housings aren't designed to use hids. You can buy the DEPO headlights on ebay that use H4 and H1 bulbs that produce a better pattern or you can retrofit projectors in the depo lamps. If you want to keep your oem lights try a set of HIR's.

If you crave good lighting do a retrofit. It's not terribly difficult but time consuming.

YOU may be able to see, but the people in front of you cannot. There is a reason it's against the law to put hid's in halogen reflector housings.

The common opinion about the HID kits you can install them and they are very bright, but the light pattern from the bulbs is not designed for the standard halogen housings that came with our land cruisers, and thus will not produce the proper cut off pattern in order to not blind on coming traffic when driving at night. many have installed a projector lens from the Acura TSX or the E46 BMW's and then sand off the filament from the stock glass lens, this will give lots of light output and a clean cut off pattern, you can also buy a new set of DEPO headlamps and install some projectors in them for similar results.

its been discussed many times though, so a search of "depo projector" or "Danial Stern HID" in the MUD search engine or in google will provide you with all the info you need

I have Depos and can't stand the spread and those so-called steps are more like spikes. I am currently using H4 Silverstar Xtravision bulbs and I cant' see much at night because the lights are aimed low due the lift and to keep the "spikes" from blinding drivers.
A buddy of mine has a DDM HID kit that we will try out. I know that the spread and spikes/steps will remian the same. I am hoping it can be much more brighter though. If that does not work, I will more then likely get the projectors off ebay.

what do you mean by spikes or steps? does that mean i might be better off using my factory light housings?

Those DEPOs seem to have a pretty darn good cutoff, did you get flashed with those (assuming aimed properly)?

Nope.

The "spikes" are caused because the lights have a e-code pattern. A lot of cars have this pattern even in america. My mom's e46 bmw has it, as does the previous body style accord, tacoma, ect. These spikes should not blind oncoming traffic if you got the lights for left hand drive cruiser. Meaning the uplift is on the passengers side. The only thing it will do is light up there passengers side rear view mirror if your tailgating.

I tested a set of hid's in the depos and it honestly was not bad, just had a very narrow beam pattern. I didn't get flashed and they retained a okay cutoff. If you chose to do so make sure you get the H4 hi/low kit. The one with the shield and telescopic bulb.

I think this sums it up for all those out there that think you can put a HID light in stock housing or a housing that does not have a projector(IT IS ILLEGAL!!!!!)No matter what your told, you will blind oncoming traffic!!!

Too much money up upgrading projectors, etc. I am running HID lows and highs and I have driven by a lot of cops, and they never say anything. I guess cops in South Florida are too busy with drugs, kidnapping, grand theft auto, etc that will not waste their time on that.

And the high beams are high!

I have had HIDs installed in my stock housings for over 6 months and I have not been flashed one time. I made sure I adjusted my beams down more than they were before, and I can actually see at night with my low beams on. I am extremely happy with the difference. It was worth it. YMMV.

Mind posting a picture of the beam pattern?

I only have the Slee light harness & a full set of real Silverstars -- the light output just swapping to the Slee harness is amazing, especially when you consider the cost difference.

For $45, I'd really try this first: Slee - Light Harness

I had PIAA extreme white + in H3 & H4 in a car that had a relay light harness & they are comparable in color/temp to the Osrams, so I'd try a light harness for the money & see if you're not satisfied, my opinion.

But Depo housings are getting harder to find....

That's a great price for the Depos.

Depos+Slee Harness+HIR is a great combination without the hassle of retrofitting HID.

Pic #2 shows the step, what I call spikes because they are not like the steps I am use to in pic #3. They just shoot up. I can't stand them IMO.

To HID are the easiest option for upgrading the stock lights but I am going to look into this HIR stuff. The stock low beams are simply dangerous if you ask me.

I myself run 8000k hids in the stock housing because I'm a college student on a low budget, call me an a******. Haters are going to hate. If I had the money, trust me, I would run projectors. I've driven up right behind cops and they have done nothing in north carolina. If it was that big if a problem, they would have done something about it. HIDs are a great cheap way to increase your visibility IMO
